Cortland County High School Sports Recaps: Wrestling, Basketball, and Track & Field (January 26th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:

Varsity Wrestling: Cortland vs. Fulton

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost a tough match-up against Fulton with a team score of 24-48

Cortland’s next match will be at home this Friday (January 28th) against Homer. The Cortland County rivalry match-up is scheduled to begin at 6pm. 

Varsity Girls Basketball: Marathon vs. Owego

The Marathon Lady Olympians beat Owego 52-32 on the road in order to improve to an overall record of 11-2. Marathon has been ranked #3 in the state for Class D since January 25th.

“Our defense was great for us again,” said Marathon head coach Andrew Pierce. “Ball pressure and timely steals have been key for us all season, and again tonight.”

The Olympians were led by Brooke Tillotson (30 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 9 steals & 2 blocks), Abigail Ensign (9 points, 10 rebounds & 2 assists), Addison Oram (6 points & 6 rebounds), Paige Hurlburt (5 points & 8 rebounds), and Bailee Hurlburt (2 points & 5 rebounds). 

Owego was led by Madison Mcevoy (13 points) and Lauren Gilbert (7 points). 

Up next, the Lady Olympians will host Tioga this Friday (January 28th) at 7:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Homer vs. Fowler

The Homer Trojans lost a tough game against Fowler on the road with a score of 33-61. 

With this loss, the Trojans have fallen to a 5-8 overall record. 

The Trojans were led by Wyatt Wilbur (14 points) and Evan Butts (6 points).

Fowler was led by Gilbert Del Rosario-Morel (21 points) and Spencer Wellington (13 points). 

Homer’s next game is scheduled to be on the road against Bishop Ludden this Friday (January 28th) at 7:30pm. 

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Schools

The Homer boys and girls indoor track & field teams competed in the OHSL Division I Track & Field Championships at Onondaga Community College Wednesday evening.  

According to Homer coach George Schneider, “athletes that won their event earned First Team All-League Honors. Athletes that finished second, earned Second Team All-League Honors.” 

The Homer boys’ team finished 5th overall out of 11 schools, while the Homer girls’ team  finished 3rd overall out of 12 schools. 

Individual Highlights: 

Homer Boys

  • Tasker Dennis placed 2nd in the shot put event (Result-39’4”). With this result, Dennis  broke the Homer sophomore class shot put event record. . 
  • Tommy Mahunik came in 3rd in the 300 meter dash (Time- 38.60). He also placed 4th in the 600 meter run (Time- 1:33.28). His 300 meter time was a personal best. 
  • Jack Smith placed 3rd in the 55 meter high hurdles (Time- 8.81). He also placed 6th in the triple jump event (Result- 33’6”). 
  • Bryce Hoffmann placed 3rd in the weight throw event (Result- 37’11”).
  • Jack Smith (58.4), Cooper Vandee (58.8), Brodrick Butts (61.8), and Tommy Mahunik (54.2) came in 3rd in the 4x400 meter relay (Time- 3:53.26). Jack, Brodrick, and Tommy ran personal best splits.
  • Jonah Campos came in 4th in the shot put event (Result- 35’9.25”).
  • Garrett Sickmon placed 5th in the 55 meter hurdles (Time- 9.39 seconds).
  • Cooper Vandee (25.4), Brodrick Butts (25.7), Dominick Rosato (27.3), and Garrett Sickmon (26.9) placed 5th in the 4x200 meter relay (Time- 1:45.31).  Brodrick, Dominick, and Garrett ran personal best splits.

Homer Girls

  • Hannah McMasters won 1st place in the shot put event (Result- 30’ 8.75”). Hannah’s throw was her best throw of the season.
  • Jane Gugerty came in 2nd in the 55 meter hurdles. (Time- 9.59). She also placed 3rd in the triple jump event (Result- 32’2.5”). Jane’s 55 meter hurdles time was her best of the year. 
  • Mayshelle Hyde placed 3rd in the weight throw event (Result- 25’ 9.75”).
  • Camdyn Cole placed fourth in the triple jump event (31’7.25”). She also came in 4th in the 55 meter dash (Time- 7.99).
  • Molly McMasters placed 4th in the weight throw event (Result- 25’ 8”). She also placed 6th in the shot put event (Result- 26’8.5”). Her shot put performance was a personal best, and qualified her for the Sectional Championships.
  • Camdyn Cole (29.4), Jane Gugerty (28.5), Caitlin McCloy (29.8), and Mikayla Smith (30.6) came in 4th in the 4x200 meter relay (Time- 1:58.47). Their overall time was their best time of the year. Both Jane and Caitlin ran personal best splits.
