City Police: Cortland man allegedly strikes victim with a claw hammer

A Cortland man was arrested Thursday afternoon after he allegedly struck a victim in the face with a claw hammer, according to a City of Cortland Police Department release Friday morning.

At 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, the release states city police officers responded to a “reported disturbance” at Brown Avenue. According to the release, the investigation noted that an intoxicated Robert H. Keen, 35, of E. Cortland St., allegedly “engaged in a physical altercation” and “became belligerent” when he accused the victim of “staring at him.”

This led to McKeen allegedly striking the victim in the face with a claw hammer. The release states that the victim suffered a non-life threatening injury from McKeen’s hammer strike, and was “able to disarm” the hammer from McKeen.

McKeen has been charged with second-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon (both Class-D felonies). He was arraigned and remanded at the Cortland County Jail.
