Cortland Weather Outlook: Friday, January 28

Your Cortland County weather forecast for Friday, January 28, 2022:

An early morning cold front will lead to falling temperatures through the daytime hours today.

It will be a slow but steady drop as northwest winds set up behind the front. Temperatures will be in the low and even mid 20s this morning.

By the early afternoon, it will be closer to 20 degrees, and by sunset upper and mid 10s are likely.

The northwest winds will blow at 5-10 mph with gusts to 20 mph, especially in the morning. While the wind in Cortland County will stay out of the northwest into the evening, over Lake Ontario, the wind will turn northerly and then northeasterly before the sun sets.

This will have an impact on the chances for snow and sun today.

Snow showers are likely through the morning as the front passes by and some limited lake effect flares up. As the winds over Lake Ontario shift, the lake effect will move westward.

This should allow for some breaks of sun this afternoon. A few stray flurries will continue to be possible as well thanks to the nearby front.

Partly cloudy skies will continue to be possible this evening as both lake effect clouds and the fringe edge of the clouds from a developing nor’easter settle in. Nothing more than a stray flurry is expected, and that would be from lake effect, not the coastal storm.

Temperatures will continue to drop with winds eventually turning more northerly. Overnight lows will be around or just under zero degrees.

Here is a look at the weather for the next several days:
