Cortland County High School Sports Recaps: Basketball (January 29th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Saturday’s events:

Varsity Boys Basketball: Cortland vs. New Hartford

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost a tough game against New Hartford with a score of 32-62 Saturday afternoon. 

The Tigers were led by Max Gambitta (9 points), Tyler Blake (5 points), and Benjamin McGrath (5 points). 

New Hartford was led by Zach Philipkoski (28 points) and Will Trela (8 points). 

With this loss, the Tigers now hold a 9-7 record. 

Up next, Cortland will host Auburn on Tuesday (February 1st) at 6:45pm. 

Varsity Girls Basketball: Marathon vs. Ithaca

The Marathon Lady Olympians lost a close non-league game against Ithaca (a Class AA team) Saturday afternoon with a score of 47-57. 

Marathon has been ranked #3 in the state for Class D since January 25th. 

“Our girls came to play and I don’t think Ithaca wanted or expected that,” said Marathon head coach Andrew Pierce. “I am so proud of our team.“

Marathon was led by Brooke Tillotson (23 points) and Abby Ensign (12 points)

Ithaca was led by Ava Thomas (12 points), Mia Little (9 points), and Viveka Plassman (9 points). 

The now 12-3 Marathon Lady Olympians’ next game is scheduled to be played at home against Union Springs this Tuesday (February 1st) at 7:30pm.
