Cortland County High School Sports Recaps: Wrestling, Volleyball, Basketball, and Track & Field (February 5th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Saturday’s events:

Varsity Wrestling: Homer vs. Multiple Schools (Section III Class B Tournament)

The Homer Trojans hosted the Section III Class B Tournament this past Saturday (February 5th), where they placed 4th overall out of 9 participating teams. 

Individual Highlights:

  • 110: Talan Hubbard (Homer) placed 1st after defeating Donavan Fraher (Marcellus) in the championship finals - Decision 4-0
  • 215: Sam Sorenson (Homer) placed 1st after beating Blair Wakula (Homer) in the championship finals - Pin
  • 215: Blair Wakula (Homer) placed 2nd after losing to Sam Sorenson (Homer) in the finals - Pin
  • 118: Hunter Lines (Homer) came in 2nd after losing to Carl Santariello (Marcellus) in the championship finals - Decision 11-7
  • 172: Maddox Johnson (Homer) placed 2nd after losing to Angelo Turo (Jordan-Elbridge) in the championship finals - pin 
  • 285: Tayvn Malchak (Homer) came in 2nd after losing to Joshua Salsman (Camden) in the championship finals - Decision 3-2
  • 189: Zander Johnson (Homer) came placed 3rd after defeating Reegan Macklen (SJSC) in the consolation finals - Decision 9-2
  • 132: Jeffrey Stauber (Homer) placed 5th after defeated Gavin Ciota (Marcellus) in the fifth place finals - Decision 2-1
  • 160: David Morse (Homer) came in 5th after beating Jayden Abbott (Marcellus) in the fifth place finals - Pin
  • 138: Lukas Quinn (Homer) placed 6th after losing to Alex Lostracco (Marcellus) in the fifth place finals - Decision 4-0

Varsity Wrestling: Cortland vs. Multiple Schools (Section III Class B Tournament)

The Cortland Tigers participated in the Section III Class B Tournament held at Homer High School this past Saturday (February 5th), where they placed 8th overall out of 9 participating teams. 

Individual Highlights: 

  • 160: Luca Canzano (Cortland) placed 2nd after losing to Isaac Svitavsky (Jordan-Elbridge) in the championship finals - Major Decision 9-0
  • 132: Avery Canzano (Cortland) came in 4th after losing to Edward Geer (Chittenango) in the consolation finals - Decision 8-4
  • 145: Wyatt Tinker (Cortland) placed 4th after losing to Conor Meagher (Camden) in the consolation finals - Decision 8-4
  • 118: Zach Price (Cortland) placed 6th after losing to Kaylee Swalgin (Jordan-Elbridge) in the fifth place finals - Decision 13-6
  • 189: Luke Darling (Cortland) came in 6th after losing to Macsen Cameron (Chittenango) in the fifth place finals - Decision 6-4

Varsity Wrestling: Marathon vs. Multiple Schools (Section IV Class B Tournament)

The Marathon Olympians participated in the Section IV Class B Tournament this past weekend held at Windsor High School, where they placed 2nd overall out of 12 participating teams. 

Individual Highlights: 

  • 152: Ethan Morrison (Marathon) won 1st place after defeating Ryan Kennedy (Windsor) in the championship finals - Decision 7-4
  • 285: Logan Jamison (Marathon) won 1st place after beating Kam Hills (Waverly) in the championship finals - Decision 5-1
  • 118: Brendan Gumaer (Marathon) came in 2nd after losing to Trevor Cortright (Chenango Valley) in the finals - Pin
  • 189: Trevor Hurlbert (Marathon) placed 2nd after losing to Gabriel Monroe (Windsor) in the finals - Pin
  • 126: Anthony Neville (Marathon) placed 3rd after defeating Nick Swartz (Windsor) in the consolation finals - Pin
  • 138: Brittan Keller (Marathon) came in 3rd after beating Keagan Bacon (Sidney) in the consolation finals - Decision 4-3
  • 145: Brayden Homer (Marathon) placed 4th after losing to Jozsiah Varga (OFA) in the consolation finals
  • 215: Dawsyn Cole (Marathon) placed 4th after losing to Nate Demmer (NV) in the consolation finals - Pin
  • 132: Tim Morehouse (Marathon) placed 5th after winning against Mark Winchell (Maine-Endwell) in the fifth place finals (Pin)

Varsity Volleyball: Cincinnatus vs. Fabius-Pompey (Section III Class D Quarter-Finals)

The #9 ranked Cincinnatus Lady Lions lost a tough match against Fabius-Pompey (#1 ranked) in the quarter-final round of the Section III Class D Sectional Tournament. 

Cincinnatus lost the match in three sets. 

Note: Individual stats of the game were not available at the time this article was written. 

With this loss, Cincinnatus ended their season with an overall record of 6-7. 

Varsity Girls Basketball: Cortland vs. Central Square

The Cortland Lady Tigers defeated Central Square 41-37 in order to improve to a 12-4 overall record. 

Cortland was led by Kendall Mack (12 points), Mallory Turner (8 points), and ​​Danielle Benjamin (8 points). 

Central Square was led by Samantha Haley (17 points) and Natalie Bush (9 points). 

Up next, Cortland is scheduled to take on Fulton on the road this Tuesday (February 8th) at 6:45pm. 

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Schools

The Homer boys and girls indoor track & field team competed in the Class B1 Sectional Championships on Saturday at Onondaga Community College (OCC). The meet was originally scheduled for Thursday evening, but it was postponed due to poor weather conditions.  

The Homer boys’ team placed 4th overall out of 11 schools, while the Homer girls’ team placed 6th overall out of 11 schools. 

Individual Highlights: 

Homer Boys

  • Logan Darling won 1st place in the weight throw event (Result- 45’5.5”). His weight throw result qualifies him to compete in the State Qualifier Meet. He also placed 2nd in the shot put event (Result- 36’ 5.5”). His shot put throw was a personal best.  
  • Jonah Campos won 1st place in the shot put event (Result- 37’3.75”).
  • Tommy Mahunik won the 600 meter run (Time- 1:26.96). He also placed 5th in the 300 meter dash (Time- 38.94). His 600 meter run time was a personal best. 
  • Tasker Dennis placed 3rd in both the weight throw event (Result- 39’8”) and the shot put event (Result- 36’ 4.25”). Dennis’ weight throw broke the sophomore class record in the event.
  • Bryce Hoffmann placed 4th in both the  shot put event (Result- 35’1.5”) and the weight throw event (Result- 39’3.25”). His weight throw performance was a personal best.
  • Jack Smith came in 2nd in the 55 meter high hurdles (Time- 8.88). He also placed 5th in the triple jump event (Result- 36’5.75”).
  • Cooper Vandee placed 5th in the 1,000 meter run (Time- 2:53.40). His 1,000 meter performance was a personal best. 
  • Tommy Mahunik (24.6), Cooper Vandee(24.9), Brodrick Butts (26.0), and Jack Smith (24.9) placed 4th in the 4x200 meter relay (Time- 1:40.52). Their time was the best run by Homer this year.
  • Dominick Rosato (61.5), Garrett Sickmon (61.2), Damian Brown (64.7), and Brodrick Butts (58.0) placed 6th in the 4x400 meter relay (Time- 4:05.46)

Logan Darling, Tasker Dennis, and Tommy Mahunik will be competing in the Section III State Qualifier Meet at OCC on Wednesday (February 16th) at 4pm.

Homer Girls: 

  • Hannah McMasters broke the school record in the shot put by over a foot to win 1st place in the event (Result- 32’8”). Her throw currently ranks her 2nd in all of Section III.
  • Jane Gugerty placed 3rd in the 55 meter hurdles (Time- 9.75). She also placed 5th in the triple jump event (Result- 31’9”).
  • Molly McMasters broke the sophomore class record in the weight throw event to place 3rd in the event (Result- 28’8”)
  • Camdyn Cole placed 4th in the triple jump event (Result- 31’11.25”). She also came in 5th in the 55 meter dash (Time- 7.92). Her 55 meter dash time was a personal best. 
  • Camdyn Cole (28.7), Jane Gugerty (29.6), Caitlin McCloy (29.3), and Mikayla Smith (29.9) placed 3rd in the 4x200 meter relay (Time- 1:57.62).  Their combined time was their best time of the season.
  • Caitlin McCloy (71.4), Mikayla Smith (72.2), Maggie Mahunik (75.2), and Alyssa Swayze (73.6) came in 6th in the 4x400 meter relay (Time- 4:52.33). Their combined time was their best time of the season. 

Hannah McMasters will be competing in the Section III State Qualifier Meet at OCC on Wednesday (February 16th) at 4pm.
