Your Cortland County weather forecast for Saturday, March 12, 2022:

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect today as a cold front brings snow this morning, strong winds this afternoon, and lake effect tonight.

Snow will continue to fall steadily this morning and will be heavy at times. The steady snow should taper to flurries during the midday and early afternoon hours. Snow totals through the afternoon, including what has already fallen since last night, will come in around 6-10 inches.

Winds will build through the morning but will be strongest in the afternoon. These winds will come from the northwest with speeds around 15 mph and gusts around 40 mph.

The strong winds will produce blowing and drifting snow, keeping road conditions poor and visibility low, especially in rural and open areas.

Snow will increase again this evening as the lake effect cranks up. Periods of moderate to heavy snow are likely through the evening hours before gradually winding down after midnight.

The lake effect should put down an additional 2-4 inches with locally higher amounts. Winds will remain blustery through the evening with gusts around 30 mph.

Temperatures will lose a few degrees during the daytime hours today, settling to around 20 this afternoon. A further drop through the 10s will take place after sunset with a low around 10 degrees.
