Village of Homer officials and representatives from the police department convened for the grand reopening of the community basketball courts on Monday, which are off of South Main Street in the village.

The basketball courts have been closed off since late summer last year due to upgrades. The upgrades to the court include new rims and netting, backboards and poles – four of each.

The initiative for upgrades to the basketball courts was anchored by former village board of trustees member Tim Daley, who was also the chair of the village’s recreation committee.

The village is looking to install light-emitting diode (LED) lights around the courts this summer, and potentially resurface or paint the ground of the courts in the near future, village treasurer Tanya DiGennaro said.

DiGennaro noted that funds to cover the costs of the upgrades to the basketball courts included $9,625.08 from the village's general fund budget, and $2,500 through a fundraiser led by Daley.

The cost of the LED light installation will be covered by a New York Power Authority grant. The village has $11,402 to cover the installation costs, DiGennaro said.
