A Cortland man was arrested Tuesday due to a warrant in his name, according to a City Police Department report on Wednesday.

The report states that Kaywon L. Pitman, 34 of Main Street in Cortland, had an active family court warrant out of Genesee County. City deputy chief David Guerrera noted the warrant was due to Pittman “missing at least one” court date in regards to paternity status of a child.

Prior to his arrest, the release states that Pittman engaged in a “verbal dispute” with a family member at a residence on Frederick Avenue. Following Pitman’s departure from the residence, the family member reached out to city police, and tipped them about the warrant out on Pittman.

Guerrera said there was no indication as to what the “verbal dispute was about,” adding that Pittman was just visiting the family member at the Frederick Avenue residence.

City police proceeded to arrest Pittman at his Main Street apartment and brought him into custody. Upon searching Pittman, city police found a loaded Taurus 9mm semi-automatic handgun in his possession, the report states.

The report states that the handgun was “possessed illegally,” due to Pittman having a prior criminal conviction in regards to the weapon. The handgun contained more than 10 rounds of ammunition and was “possessed loaded while in public,” the report continues.

While being in possession of the handgun in public, the report states that Pittman also had the handgun in his possession during his visit to the Frederick Avenue residence. Guerrera noted that there was no indication if the family member was aware of Pittman’s possession of the handgun.

Pittman has been charged with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon (Class-C Felonies), and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon (Class-C Felonies).

Pittman was recently arraigned in city court, and due to reappear at a later date. He is currently being held at Cortland County Jail on $1,000 cash bail.

Genesee County has also filed a detainer for Pittman to appear in family court at a later date.
