Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 2nd)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Saturday’s events:

Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. Oswego

The Cortland Purple Tigers won their first regular season game of the season on Saturday (April 2nd) at home with a score of 13-1 against Oswego. 

Cortland was led by Max Gambitta (2 runs, 3 RBI’s & 2 hits), Caden Albright (2 runs & 1 hit), Scott Hourigan (2 runs & 1 hit), Tyler Blake (1 run, 3 RBI’s, 1 home run & 2 hits), Caden Congdon (1 run & 1 hit), Kooper Knabe (1 run, 2 RBI’s & 1 hit), Andrew Partigianoni (1 run, 1 RBI & 1 run), Ethan Johnson (1 run, 1 RBI, 2 hits), Alexander Dintino (1 run), Liam Woodward (1 run, 1 RBI & 1 hit). 

Oswego’s only run of the game was scored by Jack Reynolds. 

Cortland pitchers Caden Congdon and Kooper Knabe combined for a total of 5 strikeouts. Knabe recorded 3 strikeouts and Congdon recorded 2 strikeouts.  

Oswego’s pitchers Matt Krul, Tom Kirwan, Jack Donovan, and Andrew Paura combined for a total of 4 strikeouts. Krul and Kirwan both threw one strike out each, while Paura threw 2 strikeouts. 

Up next, Cortland is scheduled to play a scrimmage against Baldwinsville at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex today (April 4th) at 4pm. 

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Cazenovia

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost 3-18 against Cazenovia in their first regular season game of the season. 

The Tigers were led by Benjamin McGrath (2 goals & 1 assist) and Joseph Banewicz (1 goal). 

Cazenovia was led by Brody Coleman (7 goals & 2 assists), DB Falge (3 goals & 3 assists), Forrest Ives (4 goals & 1 assist), Wyatt Hartley (2 goals), Chris Vecchiarelli (1 goal), Jack Wright (1 goal), and James LeFever (3 assists). 

Cortland goalies Matthew Honan and Declan Vail combined for a total of 14 saves in the game. Honan made 8 saves, while Vail made 6 saves. 

Cazenovia goalie Tucker Ives made a total of 5 saves in the game. 

Cortland’s next game will be at home against Homer on Thursday (April 7th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Homer vs. New Hartford

The Homer Lady Trojans have started their season with a 1-0 record after beating New Hartford 20-4 on Saturday (April 2nd). 

The Lady Trojans were led by Kloey Roos (7 goals & 1 assist), Maria Partis (5 goals & 3 assists), Camryn Calabro (2 goals & 6 assists), Gracie Patriarco (3 goals & 3 assists), Hannah Slade (2 goals & 1 assist), and Madison Wethje (1 goal).

New Hartford was led by Ilana McCarthy (3 goals) and Bella Kolb (1 goal). 

Homer goalie Sarah Sovocool recorded a total of 3 saves in the game, while Emily Picolla made 10 saves for New Hartford. 

Up next, Homer will take on LaFayette on the road this Tuesday (April 5th) at 4:30pm.
