Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 4th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Monday’s events:

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. McGraw

The Marathon Lady Olympians defeated McGraw with a score of 16-0 Monday afternoon. 

“We have six seniors and every player is a returning player, that was the difference tonight,” said Marathon head coach Jamie Bush. “The real story tonight is that both teams got to play for the first time outdoors. We have a lot to work on, but it was nice to get the win.”

Marathon was led by Brooke Tillotson (2 runs), Brook Morsey (1 runs), Brie Carter (2 runs), Sezja Brooks (2 runs), Paige Hurlburt (1 run), Marissa Allen (2 runs), Kassidy VanOrder (2 runs), Bailee Hurlburt (2 runs), and Haylee Chrysler (2 runs). 

“We have a very young team and they are learning and developing as a team,” said McGraw head coach Jessyca Doran. “We had two double plays and some of the girls were making contact with the ball. All in all, it was a learning experience for us. We look forward to continuing to grow and learn.”

Up next, Marathon is scheduled to take on Groton on the road this Wednesday (April 6th) at 4:30pm; while McGraw hits the road to play Stockbridge Valley today (April 5th) at 4:30pm.

Varsity Baseball: Homer vs. Cazenovia

The Homer Trojans defeated Cazenovia with a score of 4-3 in order to improve to a 1-1 record Monday afternoon. 

Homer was led by Joey Case (1 run & 2 hits), Mitchell Earle (1 run & 1 hit), Zander Johnson (1 run & 1 hit), Maddox Johnson (1 run), Tristan Allen (2 hits & 2 RBI’s), and Tanner Douglass (1 hit & 1 RBI). 

Cazenovia was led by Jack Donlin (1 run & 2 hits), Jack Byrnes (1 run & 2 hits), and Sully Clarke (1 run). 

Homer pitchers Zander Johnson, Tristan Allen, and Joey Case combined for a total of 13 strikeouts. Johnson threw 8 strikeouts, Allen threw 4 strikeouts, and Case threw 1 strikeout. 

Cazenovia pitchers Jack Byrnes and Jack Donlin threw a combined total of 10 strikeouts. Donlin threw 6 strikeouts and Byrnes threw 4 strikeouts.

Up next, Homer will play against Phoenix on the road this Friday (April 7th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Track & Field: Marathon vs. Southern Cayuga & Trumansburg

The Marathon boys and girls track & field team competed against Southern Cayuga and Trumansburg in a dual meet Monday evening. 

Results:

  • Marathon (41) vs. Southern Cayuga (40)
  • Marathon (18) vs. Trumansburg (102)
  • Trumansburg (103) vs. Southern Cayuga (16)

Highlights from Marathon: 

  • Conor Holland placed 1st in the high jump event (Result- 5’10”). He also came in 2nd in both the 400 meter dash (Time- 54.38) and the 200 meter dash (Time- 25.54)
  • Aidan Hafer placed 3rd in the 800 meter run (Time- 2:30.21)
  • Connor Brown placed 3rd in the discus throw event (Result- 82’07”) 

Varsity Girls Track & Field: Marathon vs. Southern Cayuga & Trumansburg

The Marathon girls track & field team competed against Southern Cayuga and Trumansburg in a dual meet on Monday. 

Results:

  • Marathon (56) vs. Southern Cayuga (48)
  • Marathon (21) vs. Trumansburg (101)
  • Trumansburg (80) vs. Southern Cayuga (34)

Highlights from Marathon: 

  • Addison came in 3rd in both the 100 meter hurdles (Time- 19.42) and the 400 meter dash (Time- 1:07.68). 
  • Rylee Thomas placed 2nd in the 1,500 meter run (Time- 6:38.01)
  • Abigail Trabucco came in 2nd in the 400 meter dash (Time- 1:04.95) 
  • Grace Colledge placed 3rd in the discus throw event (Result- 53’07”)
