Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 5th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Homer vs. LaFayette

The Homer Trojans won their first regular season game with a score of 13-9 against LaFayette Tuesday night. 

The Trojans were led by Hunter Riehlman (4 goals & 1 assist), Jake Calabro (3 goals & 5 assists), Reid Partis (2 goals & 1 assist), Sam Bieber (2 goals), Wyatt Wilbur (1 goal), Evan Butts (1 goal), and Logan Goodman (1 assist). 

LaFayette was led by Brett Bucktooth Jr (4 goals & 2 assists), Gabe Edwards (4 goals), and Vern Cooke Jr (1 goal). 

Homer goalie Benjamin Bradhaw made 13 saves in the game, while LaFayette goalie Aiden Griffin also recorded 13 saves. 

Homer’s next game will be played on the road against Cortland this Thursday (April 7th) at 6pm.

Varsity Boys Tennis: Homer vs. LaFayette

The Homer Trojans defeated LaFayette with an overall team score of 5-0 on Tuesday.

  • First Singles: Homer’s Spencer Rusyniak defeated LaFayette’s Paul Coon (6-0 & 6-0)
  • Second Singles: Homer’s Raymond Meng beat LaFayette’s Griffin Garbutt (6-0 & 6-0)
  • Third Singles: Homer’s Randolph Kruman defeated LaFayette’s Jenna Reese (6-0 & 6-1)
  • First Doubles: Homer’s Conor Powers & Jackson Henderson defeated LaFayette’s Mark Humphrey & Ben Haskins (6-0 & 6-1)
  • Second Doubles: Homer’s Branon McLaughlin & Drew Cotterill defeated Devon Harris & Scott Heath Jr. (6-1 & 6-1)

Varsity Boys Tennis: Cortland vs. Oswego

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost with an overall score of 1-6 against Oswego on Tuesday.

  • First Singles: Cortland’s Tyler Cranfield defeated Oswego’s Zachary DeMott (6-3, 3-6 & 7-5)
  • Second Singles: Oswego’s Joshua Chun defeated Cortland’s Daniel Zhang (7-6,5-7 & 10-6)
  • Third Singles: Oswego’s Marcus Baker defeated Cortland’s Kyle Taylor (6-1 & 6-0)
  • First Doubles: Oswego’s Duncan Baker & Benjamin Braun defeated Cortland’s Jonathan Elmore & Connor Tasselmyer (6-1 & 6-0)
  • Second Doubles: Oswego’s Lucas Maniccia & Henry Sweeney defeated Cortland’s Jeremie Hale Jr & Wrangler Slyke (6-0 & 6-1)

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Homer vs. LaFayette

The Homer Lady Trojans defeated LaFayette on the road with a score of 15-4 in order to improve their record to 2-0. 

The Lady Trojans were led by Kloey Roos (6 goals & 2 assist), Camryn Calabro (3 goals & 8 assists), Maria Partis (2 goals & 1 assist), Hannah Slade (2 goals & 1 assist), Mallory Douglass (1 goal), Lilly Sorenson (1 goal), and Gracie Patriarco (1 assist). 

LaFayette was led by Mara Strand (2 goals), Amanda Evans (1 goal), Ava Spicer (1 goal), and Mackenzie Loughlin (1 assist). 

Homer goalies Sarah Sovocool and Breanna Romans combined for a total of 7 saves in the game. Sovocool made 7 saves, while Romans made 1 save. 

LaFayette goalie Tala Rudd recorded 16 total saves in the game. 

Up next, the Lady Trojans are scheduled to host Cazenovia this Thursday (April 7th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Cincinnatus vs. Otselic Valley

The Cincinnatus Lions started their season with a 1-0 record after defeating Otselic Valley with a score of 11-8 on Tuesday. 

The Lions were led by John Schuyler (2 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Jordan Larrabee (2 runs & 1 RBI), Cason Stafford (1 run & 2 hits), Michael Stairs (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Koda Temple (1 run & 1 RBI), Canden Stafford (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Scott Schuyler (1 run & 1 hit), and Dakota Stairs (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI). 

Cincinnatus pitchers Scott Schuyler and Avram Moses combined for a total of 13 strikeouts thrown. Schuyler threw 5 strikeouts, while Moses threw 8 strikeouts.

Cincinnatus’ next game will be played against Madison on the road this Thursday (April 7th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. Stockbridge Valley

The McGraw Eagles lost a tough game against Stockbridge Valley on the road with a score of 1-10. 

McGraw was led by Blair Mulcahy (1 run & 2 hits), Jaydon Bassett (1 hit & 1 RBI), and Nolan Knickerbocker (1 hit). 

McGraw pitchers Blake Bergey and Jaydon Bassett threw a combined total of 9 strikeouts. Bergey threw 4 strikeouts, while Bassett threw 5 strikeouts.

Up next, McGraw will play DeRuyter on the road on Tuesday (April 19th) at 4:30pm.

Varsity Baseball: Marathon vs. Southern Cayuga

The Marathon Olympians lost their first game of the regular season on the road against Southern Cayuga with a score of 1-7. 

“For our first day out I thought we played well defensively,” said Marathon head coach Bryan Hoyt. “We made no errors in the field. We have some pitching and catching things to clean up, but that’s to be expected on the first game. Offensively we struggled tonight. We need to continue working on getting our rhythm at the plate, making better contact, and putting the ball in play. We had too many strikeouts tonight. We need to cut them in half moving forward.” 

Marathon was led by Jacob Byron (1 run & 2 hits), Zachary Birdsall (1 hit), and Ian Gacek (1 hit). 

Southern Cayuga was led by Figuerow (1 run & 2 hits), Issac Brozon (2 runs & 1 hit), and Austin Cullen (2 runs & 1 hit)

Marathon pitchers Ian Gacek, Braydin Drake, and Austin Poth threw a total of 6 strikeouts in the game. Gacek threw 3 strikeouts, while Drake threw 2 and Poth threw 1. 

Southern Cayuga’s Issac Brozon and Austin Cullen threw a combined total of 7 strikeouts. Brozon threw 3 and Cullen threw 4. 

The Olympians are now scheduled to take on Southern Cayuga at home today (April 6th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Softball: Cortland vs. Jamesville-Dewitt

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost a difficult game against Jamesville-Dewitt with a score of 0-16 on Tuesday. 

The Lady Tigers’ were led by Claire Turner (1 hit) and Mallory Turner (1 hit). 

Jamesville-Dewitt was led by Emily Bulone (3 runs), Miriam Zoghby (3 runs), Kate Dorazio (2 runs), Emma White (2 runs), Kaira McMahon (2 runs), Sophia Zoghby (1 run), Kayla McQuaid (1 run), Stella White (1 run), and Amanda Aitken (1 run). 

Cortland pitcher Brenna Hogan threw 1 strikeout in the game, while Kaira McMahon threw 2 strikeouts for Jamesville-Dewitt. 

Cortland's next game will be played at home against Auburn this Thursday (April 7th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Softball: Cincinnatus vs. Otselic Valley

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions defeated Otselic Valley on the road with a score of 19-2. 

With this win, Cincinnatus now hold a 1-0 record.

Up next, Cincinnatus is scheduled to host Madison on Thursday (April 7th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Softball: McGraw vs. Stockbridge Valley

The McGraw Lady Eagles lost 0-15 against Stockbridge Valley on Tuesday. 

This loss brings McGraw down to a 0-2 record.
