Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 6th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:

Varsity Baseball: Marathon vs. Southern Cayuga

The Marathon Olympians took on Southern Cayuga for the second day in a row. This time, the Olympians were able to get a 10-9 win in order to improve to a 1-1 record. 

“I was much happier with the way we hit the ball today,” said Marathon head coach Bryan Hoyt. “We looked like a completely different team at the plate. We looked confident and were disciplined at the plate. I’m proud of the way the boys bounced back today. In the field, we made a few mistakes early that let Southern Cayuga in the game, but we cleaned things up defensively in the second half of the game and played some good baseball.”

The Olympians were led by Ian Gacek (4 runs, 3 hits & 4 RBI’s), Zachary Birdsall (1 run, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Jacob Byron (2 runs & 1 hit), Tristin Byron (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Riley Stewart (1 hit & 1 RBI), Ethan Morrison (1 hit & 1 RBI), and Eli Hoyt (1 hit). 

Southern Cayuga was led by JD Hauptfleisch (2 runs, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Parker Cullen (1 run, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), and Isaac Brozon (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI)

Marathon pitchers Zachary Birdsall and Jacob Byron threw a combined total of 5 strikeouts. Birdsall threw 3 strikeouts, while Byron threw 2 strikeouts. 

Southern Cayuga pitchers Ryne Shelton and JD Hauptfleisch threw a total of 6 strikeouts. Shelton threw 2 strikeouts, while Hauptfleisch threw 4. 

Up next, the Olympians will play Southern Cayuga for a third time on Friday (April 8th) on the road at 4:30pm.

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Christian Brothers Academy 

The Homer varsity boys and girls track & field teams competed in a meet against Christian Brothers Academy Wednesday evening. This was Homer’s first meet of the season. 

The Homer boys’ team ended up losing with a team score of 39-61, while the Homer girls’ team won 63-53. 

Here are some highlights from both the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:

Homer Boys

  • Tasker Dennis won 1st place in the shot put event (Result- 36’7”). His throw qualifies him for Sectionals.
  • Logan Darling won 1st place in the discus event (Result- 107’1”). His throw qualifies him for Sectionals.
  • Zane Moheimani won 1st place in the 3,200 meter run (Time- 12:20.7).  He also placed 3rd in the 1,600 meter run (Time- 5:28.7).
  • Damian Brown (2:58.0), Zane Moheimani (3:00.1), Matt Fish (2:52.3), and Tommy Mahunik (3:01.3) won 1st place in the 4x800 meter relay with an overall time of 11:51.5.
  • Tommy Mahunik came in 2nd place in the 200 meter dash (Time- 24.2) and the 400 meter dash (Time 53.0). Both times have qualified Mahunik for Sectionals.
  • Jonah Campos placed 2nd in the shot put event (Result- 35’6”) and the discus event (Result- 86’ 10”).  His shot put throw qualifies him for Sectionals.
  • Anderson Lowell placed 2nd in the 3,200 meter run (Time- 13:23.0). He also placed 3rd in the shot put event (Result- 34’1.5”).
  • David Songer placed 3rd in the discus event (Result- 82’3”).
  • Damian Brown placed 3rd in the 3,200 meter run (Time- 13:23.1).

Homer Girls

  • Jane Gugerty won 1st place in the 100 meter hurdles (Time- 19.3) and the 400 meter hurdles (Time- 75.8). She also placed 2nd in the triple jump event (Result- 32’2”). Her 400 meter hurdle time and triple jump performance have qualified her for Sectionals.
  • Camdyn Cole won 1st place in  the high jump event (Result- 4’4”) and the triple jump event (Result- 32'6''). She also placed 2nd in the 100 meter dash (Time- 14.0). Her triple jump result qualifies her for Sectionals.
  • Hannah McMasters won 1st place in the shot put event (Result- 30’8.5”) and the discus event (Result- 69’4”).  Her shot throw qualifies her for Sectionals.
  • Caitlin McCloy won 1st place in the long jump event (Result- 11’ 5.75”) and placed 2nd in the 200 meter dash (Time- 31.9).
  • Caitlin McCloy (3:08.5), Brielle Gilbert (3:27.3), Maggie Mahunik (3:32.8), and Alyssa Swayze (3:41.8) placed 1st in the 4x800 meter relay with an overall time of 13:50.4.
  • Maggie Mahunik placed 2nd in the 400 meter dash (Time- 76.8) and the 3,000 meter run (Time- 15:05.2).
  • Morgan Robideau placed 2nd in the long jump event (Result- 11’5”).
  • Mayshelle Hyde placed 3rd in the shot put event (Result- 21’2”) and the discus event (Result- 57’2”).
  • Alyssa Swayze placed 3rd in the 800 meter run (Time- 3:02.9) and the 1,500 meter run (Time- 6:21.5).
  • Taylor Chisholm placed 3rd in the 200 meter dash (Time- 33.0).

Varsity Track & Field: Cincinnatus vs. Multiple Schools

The Cincinnatus varsity boys and girls track & field teams competed against multiple schools (DeRuyter, Bishop Grimes & Onondaga Central) Wednesday evening. 

Here are some highlights of both the Cincinnatus boys’ and girls’ teams from yesterday’s meet:

Cincinnatus Boys

  • Trevor Shevalier came in 1st place in the 110 meter hurdles (Time- 20.90). He also came in 3rd in the high jump event (Result- 4’4”) 
  • Eric Peterson placed 2nd in the shot put event (Result- 29’ 10.5”)
  • Jack finished in 2nd place in the 110 meter hurdles (Time- 23.20)
  • Calib Baker won 1st place in the 200 meter dash (Time- 26.0) and the 400 meter dash (Time- 63.10)
  • Tyler Liddle placed 1st in the high jump event (Result- 5’6”) and in the long jump event Result- 17’10”)

Cincinnatus Girls

  • Shailynn Davis placed 1st in the 100 meter hurdles (Time- 28.10). She also placed 2nd in the high jump event (Result- 4’2”)
  • Peyton Stith came in 1st place in the 400 meter dash (Time- 71.20)
  • Justice Crane placed 1st in the high jump event (Result- 4’6”). She also placed 2nd in the discus event (Result- 66’7.5”)
  • Ariahna Silva placed 2nd in the shot put event (Result- 25’0.5”)
  • Ava Nenno placed 1st in the pole vault event (Result- 6’0”)

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Groton

The Marathon Lady Olympians defeated Groton 12-4 on the road Wednesday afternoon. 

With this win, the Lady Olympians now hold a 2-0 record at the start of the season.

Marathon’s next game will be at home against Union Springs this Friday (April 8th) at 4:30pm.
