Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 22nd)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s events:

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Nottingham (Syracuse)

The Cortland Lady Tigers defeated Nottingham (Syracuse) at home with a score of 16-10 in order to improve to a 1-2 record Friday night. 

Cortland was led by Lillian Call (8 goals & 2 assists), Margaret Starr (1 goal & 4 assists), Valerosa Gambitta (1 goal & 2 assists), Aubree Larkin (2 goals & 1 assist), Olivia Magin (3 goals), and Gabrielle Cranfield (1 goal). 

Nottingham (Syracuse) was led by Alayna Wood (6 goals), Emma Cecile (2 goals & 1 assist), Aniyah Cosby (2 goals), and Brigid Burns (1 assist). 

Cortland goalie Hayden Bulger made 8 saves in the game, while Kiley Monroe also made 8 saves for Nottingham (Syracuse). 

Cortland’s next game is scheduled to be on the road against Auburn this upcoming Monday (April 25th) at 7pm.

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Homer vs. Skaneateles

With this loss, the Lady Trojans now hold a 4-1 overall record. The Homer Lady Trojans lost 5-17 against Skaneateles Friday night. 

Homer was led by Kloey Roos (4 goals & 1 assist), Madison Wethje (1 goal), and Lilly Sorenson (1 assist).

Skaneateles was led by Lilly Marquardt (3 goals & 3 assists), Rachel Hackler (3 goals & 1 assist), Kathryn Morrissey (2 goals & 2 assists), Ava Logan (2 goals & 2 assists), Bella Brogan (3 goals), Paige Willard (2 goals), Tatum Ryan (1 goal), Julia O'Connor (2 assists), and Ella Bobbett (1 goal). 

Homer goalie Sarah Sovocool made 4 saves in the game, while Skaneateles goalie Rachelle Cain made 5 saves. 

Up next, Homer is scheduled to host Johnson City today (April 23rd) at noon.

Varsity Softball: Cortland vs. Solvay

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost a close game to Solvay with a final score of 12-13. 

With this result, Cortland has fallen to an overall record of 0-2. 

Cortland was led by Claire Turner (3 runs & 1 hit), Brenna Hogan (1 run, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Sophie Mayer (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Kaitlyn Egolf (1 run), Lauren Mott (1 hit), Molly Steve (1 hit & 1 RBI), Mallory Turner (2 runs), Aliza McCormick (3 runs & 2 hits), and  Kristin Rowland (1 run & 1 hit). 

Solvay was led by Rachel Willsey (2 runs), Maggie Kemp (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Gianna D'Eredita (1 run), Delaney Kaszubinski (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Lismariely Mendez (1 run & 1 RBI), Susie Overend (1 run, 3 hits & 3 RBI’s), Jenna Wing (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Natalie Orr (2 runs, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Antoinette Sardo (1 run), Hannah Haase (2 runs, 3 hits & 1 RBI). 

Cortland pitchers Brenna Hogan and Molly Steve combined to throw a total of 10 strikeouts from the mound. Hogan threw 8 strikeouts, while Steve threw 2.  

Jenna Wing threw 6 strikeouts for Solvay. 

Up next, Cortland will take on Central Square on the road this upcoming Tuesday (April 26th) at 5pm.

Varsity Softball: Homer vs. Cazenovia

The Homer Lady Trojans lost 3-8 against Cazenovia Friday afternoon. 

With this loss, the Lady Trojans now hold a 1-4 overall record.

Homer’s next game is scheduled to take place today (April 23rd) against Jordan-Elbridge at noon. 

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Groton

The Marathon Lady Olympians won 29-16 against Groton on Friday in order to improve to a 4-2 overall record. 

Groton scored 11 runs in the first inning, before Marathon rallied back to win. Coach Bush shared his thoughts after the game, and he said "The way we started, I thought it was over. I’m very impressed that they stuck together."

Up next, Marathon takes on Union Springs on the road on Monday (April 25th) at 4:30pm.

Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. Jamesville-Dewitt (J-D)

The Cortland Tigers defeated Jamesville-Dewitt 6-0 on the road to extend their unbeaten record to 8-0. 

Cortland was led by Max Gambitta (2 hits), Tyler Blake (2 runs & 1 hit), Caden Congdon (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Caden Albright (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Ethan Johnson (1 RBI), and Scott Hourigan (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI). 

Jamesville-Dewitt was led by Eamon Giblin (1 hit) and Carter King (1 hit). 

Cortland pitcher Kooper Knabe threw 8 strikeouts, while Jamesville-Dewitt pitchers Eamon Giblin and Carter King threw a combined total of 11 strikeouts. 

Up next, Cortland will play against Fulton at home on Monday (April 25th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Homer vs. Mexico

The Homer Trojans beat Mexico 12-0 Friday evening in order to improve to a 6-2 overall record. 

The game was called at the bottom of the fifth inning on a mercy rule. 

Homer was led by Joey Case (1 run & 1 hit), Mitchell Earle (3 runs & 1 hit), Zander Johnson (1 run, 2 hits & 4 RBI’s), Braden Marsh (3 runs, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Jon Barnes (1 run), Ian Gilbert (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), and Tanner Douglass (2 runs). 

Mexico was led by Johnathan Greeno (1 hit) and Connor Dubois (1 hit). 

Homer’s next game will be against Chittenango on the road this upcoming Monday (April 25th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Marathon vs. Tioga

The Marathon Olympians fell to a 1-6 record after losing 6-20 against Tioga on the road Friday evening. 

Marathon was led by Ian Gacek (3 hits & 3 runs), Tristin Byron (1 hit, 1 run & 1 RBI), Ethan Morrison (1 hit & 1 RBI), and Jon Forrest (1 hit). 

Tioga was led by Macumber (3 hits &  3 runs), Stoughton (2 hits & 2 runs), Perry (2 hits & 4 RBI’s), Whitmore (2 hits, 3 RBI’s & 3 runs), Roberts (1 hit, 2 RBI’s & 1 run), and Bailey (1 hit, 1 RBI & 4 runs). (Note: Only last names for Tioga’s players were available by the time this article was written).

Up next, Marathon will play Newark Valley at home on Monday (April 25th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Golf: Marathon vs. Union Springs

The Marathon Olympians lost against Union Springs Friday afternoon with a team score of 224-161. (Reminder: Lowest score in golf wins).
