Homer to institute policy on brush pickup

The village of Homer will set a new policy for when the Department of Public Works (DPW) will pick up leaves and branches from residents’ homes.

Village mayor Hall McCabe announced the changes at Tuesday’s village board of trustees meeting. He noted the DPW is busy at work on other projects.

“DPW is only going to pick up leaves and branches during the end of April and October,” McCabe said. “For all the other months, the compost site is there until it is closed in October.”

McCabe recalled a time, not too long ago, when there was a set schedule for leaves and branches pickup. This set schedule was announced to residents on their water bill.

“We have spoiled the residents a little too much,” McCabe said. He noted some residents were forming unrealistic expectations for the DPW in relation to leaves and branches pickup.

The compost site, located at 24 N. Fulton St. in Homer, is currently open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day.

According to the village website, materials accepted include garden debris, grass clippings, leaves and branches from tree trimming and storm damage. Signs are posted at the site to direct you where to put your composting materials.
