Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:

Varsity Baseball: Marathon vs. Whitney Point

The Marathon Olympians fell to a 1-8 record after losing a close game against Whitney Point with a final score of 7-11.

The Olympians were led by Ian Gacek (1 hit, 1 RBI & 2 runs), Zachary Birdsall (1 hit & 3 RBI’s), Jacob Byron (1 hit, & 3 runs), Braydin Drake (1 hit & 1 run), and Tim Morehouse (1 hit).

Whitney Point was mainly led by Remington Lounsbery (1 hit & 1 run) and Dillon Kooiman (1 hit, 1 RBI & 1 run).

“Errors got us again tonight,” said Marathon head coach Bryan Hoyt. “We played much better, especially considering the elements, but we still have some things to tighten up moving forward. Ian Gacek pitched a great game tonight (13 K’s, 2 hits, and only 2 ER). We have to do a better job closing games out when we have a pitcher throwing the way he did today. Offensively, I thought we did well.”

Marathon’s next game will be on the road against Moravia on Monday May 2nd at 4:30pm.

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Southern Cayuga

The Marathon Lady Olympians lost to Southern Cayuga with a score of 0-11.

“Southern Cayuga is a much improved team and we just could not get anything going all night,” said Marathon head coach Jamie Bush. Harvatine only struck out one batter, allowed 5 hits and two walks. Her defense did the rest. We are giving out too many walks as Southern Cayuga only had 4 hits, but plated 11 runs. As a team we did make contact with the ball, just did not find the gaps.”

Note: Individual stats of the game were not available by the time this article was written.

Up next, Marathon will play Moravia on the road this Friday (April 29th) at 4:30pm.
