Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 3rd)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Oswego 

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost 10-11 against Oswego on Tuesday, bringing their record down to 0-9. 

The Tigers were led by Ben McGrath (7 goals & 3 assists), Joe Banewicz (1 goal & 1 assist), Ryan Kline (1 goal), Bodey McGrath (1 goal), and Matt Honan (11 saves).  

Oswego was led by Dylan Dunsmoor (1 goal & 4 assists), Logan Crannell (3 goals), Cooper Fitzgerald (2 goals), Jack O'Leary (1 goal & 1 assist), Aiden Seinoski (1 assist), and Joah Defren (1 goal). 

Up next, Cortland will take on Jamesville-Dewitt on the road today (May 4th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Homer vs. Westhill 

The Homer Trojans fell to a 6-4 overall record after losing 9-10 against Westhill.

Homer’s next game will be played on the road against Chittenango on Thursday (May 5th) at 5:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Homer vs. Mexico

The Homer Lady Trojans defeated Mexico 14-5 in order to improve their overall record to 8-2. 

Homer was led by Kloey Roos (6 goals & 1 assist), Gracie Patriarco (2 goals  2 assists), Mallory Douglass (2 goals), Hannah Slade (2 goals), Camryn Calabro (1 goal & 1 assist), Sarah Sovocool (1 goal & 1 save), and Aislynn Cobb (4 saves). 

Mexico was led by Mackenzie Craig (2 goals), Anyssia Ingersoll (2 goals), Alecsis Buda (1 goal), and Emily Parkhurst (2 saves). 

According to Homer coach Morgan Seibel, during the game Kloey Roos scored her 215th career goal, breaking Homer's school record of 214 goals held by Olivia Porter. 

Homer is now scheduled to play at home against Chittenango on Thursday (May 5th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Oswego

The Cortland Lady Tigers beat Oswego 12-10 on Tuesday. 

With this win, the Lady Tigers improved their overall record to 2-6.

Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. Auburn

The Cortland Purple Tigers defeated Auburn 2-1 on the road Tuesday night in order to improve to a 12-1 record. 

Cortland was led by Max Gambitta (1 run), Andrew Partigianoni (1 run), Caden Albright (2 hits), Scott Hourigan (2 hits), Tyler Blake (1 RBI), Caden Congdon (1 hit), Ethan Hay (1 hit), Christopher Yang (1 hit),and Kooper Knabe (8 strikeouts thrown). 

Auburn was led by Owen Birchard (1 run, 1 hit & 1 strikeout thrown), Mac Maher (1 hit), Lucas West (3 strikeouts thrown), and Myles McBride (1 strikeout thrown). 

Up next, Cortland will take on Oswego on the road this Friday (May 6th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Homer vs. Cazenovia

The Homer Trojans beat Cazenovia 12-3 on Tuesday. With this win, the Trojans improved to an 8-4 overall record. 

Homer was led by Jeffrey Stauber (1 run), Joey Case (1 hit, 1 RBI & 2 strikeouts thrown), Tristan Allen (2 runs & 2 hits), Mitchell Earle (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Brycen Coggins (1 run & 1 RBI), Zander Johnson (1 RBI), Braden Marsh (1 run), Jon Barnes (2 runs), Ian Gilbert (1 run), Maddox Johnson (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Tanner Douglass (1 run, 4 hits & 4 RBI’s), and Zander Johnson (9 strikeouts thrown). 

Cazenovia was led by Jacob Grevelding (1 hit), Jack Byrnes (1 run & 6 strikeouts thrown), Jacob Szalach (1 hit), AJ Rothfeld (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Sully Clarke (1 run & 1 hit), Benjamin Orbach (1 strikeout thrown), and Jacob Szalach (3 strikeouts thrown). 

Homer’s next game is now scheduled to be played on the road against Marcellus this Thursday (May 5th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Marathon vs. Moravia

The Marathon Olympians fell to Moravia with a final score of 1-10 Tuesday evening. 

The Olympians were led by Tristin Byron (2 hits & 1 RBI), Zachary Birdsall (1 hit & 12 strikeouts thrown), Jeff Daugherty (1 hit), and Jacob Byron (1 hit, 1 run & 2 strikeouts thrown).

Moravia was led by Eli Landis (4 hits, 1 RBI, 3 runs & 8 strikeouts thrown), Mason (2 hits, 2 RBI’sI & 2 runs), Luke Landis (2 hits, 2 RBI’s), and Aiden Kelley (1 hit, 1 run & 3 strikeouts thrown).  

“I thought we played a lot better tonight,” said Marathon head coach Bryan Hoyt. “Defensively we made plays, offensively we hit the ball well. I am proud of how the boys stepped up and played today. Zach pitched his best game of the year (12 K’s, 3 ER). Moravia is a very good team, well coached and disciplined and we hung right with them. I’m pleased with the effort the boys gave today.”

Up next, Marathon will play Moravia again, but this time on the road this Thursday (May 5th) at 4:30pm.    

Varsity Baseball: Cincinnatus vs. Brookfield

The Cincinnatus Lions lost a tough game to Brookfield with a score of 0-16. With this loss, Cincinnatus has fallen to an overall record of 1-5. 

Cincinnatus was led by Scott Schuyler (1 hit), Dakota Stairs (1 hit), Cason Stafford  (3 strikeouts thrown), and Jack Stafford (3 strikeouts thrown). 

Brookfield was led by Bryce Smith (2 runs, 4 hits & 3 RBI’s), Gabe VanNort (1 hit & 1 RBI), Quentin Moon (4 runs, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Ryan Frazier (1 run & 1 hit), Antoni Talarico (2 runs, 1 hit & 3 RBI’s), Jordan Dibrango (1 run, 1 hit, 1 RBI & 2 strikeouts thrown), Joe Walker (3 runs, 1 hit & 6 strikeouts thrown), and Kaden Ondrako (3 runs, 2 hits & 2 RBIs).

Cincinnatus is now scheduled to play their next game against McGraw on the road this Friday (May 6th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Softball: Cincinnatus vs. Brookfield

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions lost a close game to Brookfield with a score of 1-2 on the road. 

This result brings Cincinnatus down to an overall record of 2-5.

Up next, Cincinnatus is scheduled to play at home against McGraw this Friday (May 6th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Softball: Cortland vs. Jamesville-Dewitt

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost 0-20 against Jamesville-Dewitt on Tuesday. 

This loss brings Cortland down to a 2-4 overall record.
