Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 6th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s  events:

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. Cincinnatus 

The McGraw Eagles defeated Cincinnatus in a Cortland County rivalry game with a score of 14-1. With this result, McGraw improved their overall record to 3-2, while Cincinnatus fell to 1-6. 

McGraw was led by Nolan Knickerbocker (1 run & 1 RBI), Matthew Heath (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Nate Stiles (2 hits, 1 RBI & 8 strikeouts thrown), Blake Bergey (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Nick Sutton (1 run & 1 RBI), Jaydon Bassett (2 runs, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Blair Mulcahy (3 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), and Riley VanLiew (3 runs & 1 hit). 

Cincinnatus was led by Canden Stafford (1 run), Avram Moses (4 strikeouts thrown), and Jack Stafford (1 strikeout thrown).

Up next, McGraw is scheduled to play Madison at home today (May 7th) at 1pm, while Cincinnatus plays Stockbridge Valley at home on Friday (May 13th) at 4:30pm.

Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. Oswego

The Cortland Purple Tigers beat Oswego 14-8 in order to improve to a 13-1 overall record on Friday. 

Cortland was led by Max Gambitta (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Tyler Blake (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Caden Congdon (2 ryan, 3 hits & 4 RBI’s), Ethan Hay (1 hit & 3 RBI’s), Kooper Knabe (1 run), Andrew Partigianoni (2 runs & 1 hit), Caden Albright (3 runs, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Luke Rogoff (1 run), Austin Cotterill (1 run & 1 hit), and Scott Hourigan (1 run, 3 hits, 1 RBI & 1 strikeout thrown). 

Oswego was led by William Waterbury (1 run, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Matt Krul (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Brett Harriott (2 runs & 2 hits), Jeff Thompson (1 hit & 1 RBI), Jack Reynolds (1 run, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Owen Sincavage (1 run & 1 hit), Tom Kirwan (1 run & 1 hit), Tyler Dean (1 hit & 1 RBI), Andrew Paura (1 run & 1 RBI), Jack Donovan (2 strikeouts thrown), and Jude Parker (1 strikeout thrown).

Varsity Softball: Cincinnatus vs. McGraw 

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions defeated McGraw 25-14 Friday evening. 

With this result Cincinnatus improved to a 3-5 record, while McGraw fell to 0-6.

Cincinnatus’ next game will be played on the road against Otselic Valley on Thursday (May 12th) at 4:30pm, while McGraw takes on Madison on the road today at 1pm.

Varsity Softball: Cortland vs. Oswego 

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost both games of a double-header against Oswego on Friday.

Up next, Cortland is scheduled to play against East Syracuse Minoa at home this upcoming Tuesday (May 10th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Softball: Homer vs. Fabius-Pompey

The Homer Lady Trojans beat Fabius Pompey 8-1 in order to improve to 5-6 overall record. 

Homer was led by Lillian Luety (1 run, 4 hits & 3 RBI’s), Karigan Quaile (1 hit & 1 RBI), Alexandria Kellaway (2 hits & 1 RBI), Melina Hage (1 run), Sara Cargen (3 runs, 4 hits & 1 RBI), Catherine Apker (2 runs, 3 hits & 1 RBI), and Riley Johnson (2 strikeouts thrown).  

Fabius Pompey was led by Eliza Way (1 hit), Alyna Beardslee (1 hit), Jospehine Pazaras (1 run & 1 hit), Bailey Brown (2 hits), Leah Hohm (3 hits), and Jacqueline Janicki  (7 strikeouts thrown). 

Homer’s next game will be played at home against Cortland on Wednesday (May 11th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Schools 

The Homer boys and girls track & field teams competed in the Ed Wadas Co-Ed Invitational on Friday at Whitesboro High School. The boys’ team finished 16th out of 23 schools, while the girls’ team finished 13th out of 21 schools.

Here are some highlights of both the Homer varsity boys and girls track & field teams:

Homer Boys Highlights

  • Tommy Mahunik won 1st place in the 800 meter run (Time- 2:05.21).
  • Brodrick Butts (59.8), Cooper Van Dee (56.1), Zane Moheimani (59.3), and Tommy Mahunik (53.1) placed 5th in the 4x400 meter relay (Overall Time- 3:48.29).
  • Zane Moheimani ran a personal best time of (5:15.66) in the 1,600 meter run. He is currently less than a second off qualifying for Sectionals.

Homer Girls Highlights

  • Hannah McMasters placed 2nd in the shot put event (Result- 33’0.75”). She also placed 5th in the discus throw event (Result- 83’5”).  
  • Jane Gugerty placed 3rd in the 400 meter hurdles (Time- 71.14). Her time was her season best.

Varsity Track & Field: Cincinnatus vs. Multiple Schools 

The Cincinnatus boys and girls track & field teams competed in the REK Norwich 2022 track meet against multiple schools on Friday.

Here are some highlights of both the Cincinnatus varsity boys and girls track & field teams:

Cincinnatus Boys Highlights

  • Trevor Shevalier placed 6th in the 400 meter hurdles (Time- 1:12.07). 
  • Tyler Liddle finished 5th in the high jump event (Result- 5’4”). He also came in 6th in the long jump event (Result- 18’05.25”). 

Cincinnatus Girls Highlights

  • Peyton Stith placed 5th in the 400 meter run (Time- 1:10.15). 
  • Justice Crane won 1st place in the high jump event (Result- 4’10”). She also placed 6th in the discus throw event (Result- 82’07”) and the shot put event (26’11”). 
  • Madelyn Pittsley came in 3rd in the long jump event (Result- 15’06.25”). She also placed 4th in the triple jump event (Result- 30’05”). 
  • Ava Nenno came in 2nd in the pole vault event (Result- 6’0”). 

Varsity Track & Field: Marathon vs. Multiple Schools 

The Marathon boys and girls track & field teams competed in the Gerry O’Donnell Invitational against multiple schools on Friday.

Here are some highlights of both the Marathon varsity boys and girls track & field teams:

Marathon Boys Highlights

  • Conor Holland won 1st place in the high jump event (Result- 5’10”). He also came in 3rd in the 400 meter run (Time- 54.17), and placed 6th in the 200 meter dash (Time- 24.93). 

Marathon Girls Highlights

  • Abigail Trabucco placed 4th in the 800 meter run (Time- 2:43.74). She also came in 2nd in the pole vault event (Result- 7’0”). 
  • Addison Oram placed 5th in the high jump event (Result- 4’6”).
