Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 14th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Saturday’s events:

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Cazenovia

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost 2-20 against Cazenovia on Saturday. With this loss, Cortland has fallen to an overall record of 1-14. 

Cortland was led by Ryan Kline (1 goal), Derek Myers (1 goal), Aidan Farron (1 assist), and Declan Vail (18 saves). 

Cazenovia was led by Will Guider (1 goal), Forrest Ives (1 goal), James LaFever (2 goals), Ben Bianco (3 goals & 1 assist), Wyatt Hartley (1 goal & 2 assists), DB Falge (3 goals & 3 assists), Brody Coleman (8 goals & 2 assists), Alex Kuper (1 goal), and Tucker Ives (4 saves). 

Up next, Cortland is scheduled to play their last game of the season against Central Square today (May 16th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Chittenango

The Cortland Lady Tigers improved to a 4-9 record after defeating Chittenango 12-10 on Saturday. 

Cortland was led by Margaret Starr (2 goals), Lillian Call (5 goals), Valerosa Gambitta (2 goals), Aubree Larkin (2 goals), Ryleigh Larkin (1 goal), and Elizabeth Slavick (5 saves). 

Chittenango was led by Caitlyn Sgambellone (2 goals), Cara Kielbasa (1 goal), Tomi Newkirk (1 goal), Ashley O'Hara (4 goals), Brooke Walters (2 goals), and Abby Penfield (8 saves). 

Up next, Cortland will face off against Homer on the road for a County rivalry game tonight (May 16th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Homer vs. East Syracuse Minoa

The Homer Lady Trojans beat East Syracuse Minoa (ESM) with a score of 14-4 in order to improve to a 13-3 record. 

Homer was led by Maria Partis (2 goals), Sydney O'Donnell (1 assist), Lilly Sorenson (1 assist), Camryn Calabro (3 goals & 3 assists), Hannah Slade (2 goals), Kloey Roos (5 goals), Madison Wethje (1 goal & 1 assist), Gracie Patriarco (1 goal & 1 assist), and Sarah Sovocool (5 saves).  

ESM was led by Sara Stark (1 goal), Rylyn Commisso (1 goal), Mary Grace Godleski (1 goal), Andrianna Byrd (1 goal), and Arianna Reed (19 saves). 

Up next, Homer is scheduled to take on Cortland at home for a County rivalry game tonight (May 16th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Homer vs. Westhill

The Homer Trojans defeated Westhill with a close score of 7-6 to improve to an overall record of 12-5. 

Homer was led by Jeffrey Stauber (2 runs & 1 hit), McMahon (1 run), Joey Case (1 hit, 1 RBI & 7 strikeouts thrown), Tristan Allen (1 run, 2 hits, 1 RBI & 1 strikeout thrown), Mitchell Earle (1 run), Zander Johnson (1 run, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Ian Gilbert (2 hits), Maddox Johnson (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), and Tanner Douglass (1 hit & 1 RBI). 

Westhill was led by Taden Chester (2 hits & 1 RBI), Geoffrey Daniul (1 hit), Aiden Kerr (2 runs, 3 hits 7 2 strikeouts thrown), Tyler Campbell (1 run, 1 hit, 3 RBI’s & 4 strikeouts thrown), Michael Madigan III (1 run & 1 hit), Aiden Ryan (1 run & 1 hit), and Ryan Campbell (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI).

Up next, Homer will host Chittenango on Wednesday (May 18th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Track & Field: Marathon vs. Multiple Schools (2022 Union Spring Invitational)

The Marathon Olympians competed in the “2022 Union Springs Invitational” on Saturday. 

Here are some individual highlights of the Marathon varsity girls’ track & field team (Note: Results of the Marathon boys’ team were not available by the time this article was written):

Marathon Girls Highlights: 

  • Abigail Trabucco won 1st place in the 800 meter run (Time- 2:41.86). She also came in 2nd in the 400 meter run (Time- 1:02.83) and finished 3rd in the pole vault event (Result- 7’7”). 
  • Shaelin Phillips placed 6th in the 800 meter run (Time- 3:07.88). 
  • Rylee Thomas finished 3rd in the 1,500 meter run (Time- 6:25.61). 
  • Larina Cochran came in 4th in the 1,500 meter run (Time- 6:31.74).
