Your Cortland County weather forecast for Monday, May 16, 2022:

The first appreciable severe thunderstorm threat of the season will be today as a strong cold front, supported by winds aloft, will clash with the warm airmass overhead.

The morning hours are expected to be mainly dry with a mix of sunshine and clouds. Thunderstorms will fire up to our west and southwest during the late morning. These will race northeastward as they strengthen and organize.

By the time they arrive in Cortland County during the midday and early afternoon, they will be capable of frequent lightning and damaging winds. Large hail is not out of the question, and an isolated tornado cannot be totally ruled out, either.

Once these thunderstorms move through, the severe threat will diminish for the remainder of the day.

Immediately behind the storms, an area of heavy rain may develop, which could keep conditions soggy through the mid-afternoon.

A few more showers or non-severe thunderstorms may be possible during the late afternoon and early evening hours. Skies will turn partly cloudy tonight with quiet weather.

Winds will be out of the south at 5-10 mph ahead of the thunderstorms and will turn to the northwest and increase to 10-15 mph after the storms pass. Top gusts, not including any thunderstorms, will be 25-30 mph in the late afternoon

Temperatures will warm quickly this morning, reaching a high in the mid 70s just before the storms move in. While it is raining, temperatures are likely to be in the 60s.

Late this afternoon, as the northwest winds become more established, temperatures will fall into the mid and upper 50s. Evening temperatures will retreat to near 50, and overnight temperatures will fall to the mid 40s.

Here is a look at the weather for the next few days:

Tuesday: Possibly a couple showers. Mixed skies, otherwise. Breezy. Morning lows in the mid 40s. Afternoon highs in the upper 50s.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny. Morning lows in the low 40s. Afternoon highs near 60.

Thursday: Partly cloudy. Maybe a stray shower. Morning lows in the upper 30s. Afternoon highs in the low 70s.

Friday: Partly cloudy. Maybe a stray shower. Morning lows in the low 50s. Afternoon highs in the upper 70s.
