Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 24th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. New York Mills (Section III Class D 1st Round)

The 12th-seeded McGraw Eagles lost a close game to New York Mills (#5 seed) in the first round of the Section III Class C Tournament. 

McGraw was led by Nolan Knickerbocker (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Matthew Heath (1 run), Nate Stiles (1 run & 2 hits), Blake Bergey (1 run, 3 hits & 1 RBI), Nick Sutton (1 hit & 1 RBI), Jaydon Bassett (2 hits & 1 RBI), Blair Mulcahy (2 hits), and Riley VanLiew (1 hit). 

New York Mills was led by Ryan Komnick (3 hits & 3 RBI’s), Timothy Lavier (1 RBI), Wyatt Daniels (1 hit), Frank Calhoun (1 RBI), Ty Albright (1 hit), Leo Cruz (2 runs & 3 strikeouts thrown), Logan Copperwheat (2 runs), Valentino Rizzo (1 run), and Lucas Komnick (6 strikeouts thrown). 

With this loss, McGraw ended their season with an overall record of 7-7-1. 

Varsity Baseball: Homer vs. Bishop Grimes (Section III Class B 1st Round)

The 4th-seeded Homer Trojans took down Bishop Grimes (#13 seed) in the first round of the Section III Class B Tournament Tuesday afternoon.

Varsity Softball: Homer vs. Chittenango (Section III Class B 1st Round)

The 15th-seeded Homer Lady Trojans suffered a tough loss against Chittenango (#3 seed) with a score of 0-15 in the first round of the Section III Class B Sectional Tournament. 

“Despite the loss, I am very proud of the girls and how hard they have worked throughout this season,” said Homer head coach Cris Colasurdo. “Jenna Henderson stepped in to pitch, even though it is not a natural position for her, and she improved tremendously. Cece Rappleyea definitely was a strength behind the plate to help our pitchers. Our defense worked through some growing pains and we limited our errors as the season progressed and decreased the amount of extra base hits.”

With this loss, Homer ended their season with an overall record of 8-10. 

Varsity Softball: Cincinnatus vs. Hamilton (Section III Class D 1st Round)

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions lost 1-16 in the first round of the Section III Class D Sectional Tournament against Hamilton Tuesday afternoon.

With this loss, Cincinnatus ended their season with an overall record of 5-9. 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Homer vs. Whitesboro (Section III Class C Quarterfinal)

The 2nd-seeded Homer Lady Trojans defeated Whitesboro (#7 seed) with a final score of 17-5 in the quarterfinal round of the Section III Class C Sectional Tournament.

Varsity Boys Golf: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (IAC Tournament)

The Marathon Olympians competed in the 2022 IAC Tournament Tuesday afternoon, where they ended up placing 5th overall as a team. 

According to Marathon head coach Sydney Jennison, three Marathon players were honored as all-stars. 

Robert Anderson made first team all-star, while Bryce Hartman and Kaiden Cornell made second team all-stars. 

Here are the individual results from Marathon’s team in the tournament: 

Marathon Team Total - 421

  • Bryce Hartman - 99
  • Kaiden Cornell - 104
  • Robert Anderson - 106
  • Sam Castellot - 112

Varsity Track & Field: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (Section IV Class D Meet)

The Marathon Olympians competed in the Section IV Class D Meet on both Monday and Tuesday. 

Here are some individual results and highlights of both the Marathon boys’ and girls’ team:

Marathon Boys

  • Conor Holland won 1st place in the high jump event (Result- 5’10”). He also came in 3rd in the 400 meter run (Time- 52.80), and finished in 5th place in the 200 meter dash (Time- 24.99). 

Marathon Girls

  • Abigail Trabucco placed 2nd in the pole vault event (Result- 8’0”). She also came in 3rd in the 800 meter run (Time- 2:38.86) and the 400 meter run (Time- 1:02.17). 
  • Addison Oram placed 6th in the high jump event (Result- 4’8”). She also finished in 7th place in the 400 meter run (Time- 1:05.58).
