Two Cortland men arrested for drug possession in traffic stop

Two Cortland men were arrested this past Saturday morning following a traffic stop that resulted in drug charges, according to a Cortland County Sheriff’s Office report.

According to the report, county sheriff’s deputies initiated a traffic stop at 11:37 a.m. for Kyle J. Dayton, 27, and Patrick M. Duffy, 39, on Route 13 in the town of Cortlandville after multiple traffic violations.

Dayton (driver of the vehicle) and Duffy (passenger) were found to be in possession of 87 glassine envelopes of heroin, methamphetamines, buprenorphine, packaging materials, scales and an undisclosed amount of US currency, the report states.

Dayton has been charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (a Class-B Felony) and fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (a Class-D Felony); two counts of second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (both Class-A Misdemeanors); second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, reckless driving and displayed forged instrument (all misdemeanors); and failure to comply with a lawful order, with no seatbelt or a license (all infractions).

Duffy has been charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (a Class-B Felony) and fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (a Class-D Felony); two counts of second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (both Class-A Misdemeanors).

Dayton and Duffy were both arrested and arraigned through the centralized arraigned program. Dayton was remanded to the Cortland County Jail without bail, and Duffy was released on one’s own recognizance.
