July will get off to a hot and stormy start as a front moves into the region overnight tonight.

Out ahead of the front, southwest winds will increase this morning with speeds just over 10 mph. The blustery southwest winds will persist throughout the daytime hours with top gusts just under 30 mph.

Sunshine will be filtered by thin clouds much of the day, and the clouds will thicken further later on. Still, the southwest winds will push hotter air into the region.

Afternoon highs should reach the upper 80s to near 90 degrees. The best chance for hitting 90 degrees will come in the city of Cortland and in the southern reaches of the county.

Humidity levels will be low but increasing. By the late afternoon, there may be enough moisture to touch off a few scattered showers and thunderstorms. If any storms pop, some gusty winds or small hail would be possible.

After an early evening lull in the activity, rain and thunder will become more widespread during the late evening and overnight hours. Severe weather is not much of a concern overnight, but a few heavier downpours will be possible.

It will be a warm evening with temperatures staying near or above 70 degrees. Temperatures will eventually drop to the mid 60s by Saturday morning.

Here is a look at the weather for the next few days:

Saturday: A few morning showers, followed by increasing sunshine. Morning lows in the mid 60s. Afternoon highs in the upper 70s.

Sunday: Early sun, then increasing clouds. Morning lows in the mid 50s. Afternoon highs in the low 80s.

Monday: Sun and clouds. Perhaps a few showers or storms. Morning lows near 60. Afternoon highs near 80.

Tuesday: Sun and clouds. Morning lows in the mid 50s. Afternoon highs near 80.
