One of the hotter days of the summer will unfold today with ample sunshine and south winds. High pressure off the coast of the southeastern United States will supply the hot air.

South winds on the backside of the high will push the heat northward. Wind speeds during the day will be 5-10 mph with gusts around 20 mph. Similar winds are also expected during the evening and overnight hours.

Skies will be sunny to start today. Small fair weather cumulus clouds will quickly develop this morning and persist through the afternoon. A brief spit of rain from a couple of these clouds will be possible but is not likely.

Skies will remain partly cloudy tonight but conditions should remain dry. The chances for rain will increase Thursday morning, but mostly after sunrise.

High temperatures will be around 90 degrees. Dewpoints will be in the 60s, making it feel muggy and a degree or two warmer than it actually is.

Mid and upper 70s are likely this evening with overnight lows eventually reaching the low 70s.

Here is a look at the weather for the next few days:

Thursday: Scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially in the late morning and early afternoon. Morning lows in the low 70s. Afternoon highs in the mid 80s.

Friday: Sun and clouds. A few stray showers and storms. Morning lows in the mid 60s. Afternoon highs in the mid 80s.

Saturday: Sun and clouds. Morning lows in the mid 60s. Afternoon highs near 90.

Sunday: Showers and thunderstorms possible. If not, sunny and hot. Morning lows near 70. Afternoon highs in the mid 80s.
