Homer wrestling duo competes at national tournament; Sorenson named All-American

Homer varsity wrestlers Sam Sorenson and Talan Hubbard competed at the U.S. Marine Corps Junior & 16U Nationals at the FargoDome in Fargo, North Dakota this past week.

Sorenson placed fourth in the Junior Greco Division, marking the first time a Homer wrestler received a USA Wrestling/Junior National Championship All-American nod in school history.

Competing at 220 pounds and representing the state of New York, Sorenson lost his first match by an 11-7 decision. The senior grappler proceeded to win seven-straight matches in the consolation rounds, which set him up for the consolation semifinals.

In the consi semifinal round, Sorenson edged out Sawyer Bartelt (of Florida) by a 2-1 decision. Sorenson discovered a tough matchup in Caden Ferris (of Michigan), who topped the Homer wrestler by a 10-1 major decision.

Sorenson also took part in the Junior Freestyle Division at nationals, where he compiled a 2-2 record. His victories came on a major decision (10-0) and a decision (7-0).

Hubbard, who competed in the 120-pound 16U Freestyle Division, finished with a 0-2 mark.
