A Cortland woman was arrested earlier this week after she left her infant child unattended in a car for “an extended amount of time,” according to a Cortland County Sheriff’s Office report.

According to the report, county sheriff’s deputies responded to Price Chopper on Route 13 in the Town of Cortlandville for a welfare check. Sheriff’s deputies discovered that Joelene M. Cooper, 39, left her infant child in her “unoccupied vehicle” for an “extended amount of time” while she was in the store, the report notes.

Deputies found Cooper in the store and was taken into custody. TLC ambulance evaluated the infant at the scene, who was turned over to a family member.

Cooper has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor. She was processed, arraigned and released on one’s own recognizance.
