Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s events:

Varsity Football: Homer vs. Central Valley Academy (CVA)

The Homer Trojans (reigning Section III Class B Champions) won their first game of the regular season against CVA with a score of 16-12 at home Friday night.

"This was our first game, and it looked it,” said Homer Head Coach Gary Podsiedlik. “We had a lot of penalties, and that was one of the few disappointments of the game. What we didn't do is panic. We had faith.... We made it happen."

Homer’s points were scored by Sam Sorenson (2 rushing touchdowns) and Laramy Velasquez-Ramirez (1 extra point kick & 1 field goal).

According to Coach Podsiedlik, Laramy’s field goal kick was a 44 yarder, breaking Homer’s school record of 43 yards.

This is Laramy’s first year as a football player, as he used to previously play soccer for the Trojans.

"I wanted to give football a try, and so far I like it," said Laramy. "My personal goal is to keep breaking my own record. Today was 44. Tomorrow, it's gonna 50. Maybe the next game will be 60 (yards). I want to keep improving."

Homer’s overall offense was led by Sam Sorenson (147 rushing yards & 51 receiving yards), Wyatt Wilbur (65 passing yards), and Hunter Riehlman (30 rushing yards).

When asked about how he felt about his first game back, Sorenson said “It was the first game of the year, and it’s good to get the first one out of the way so we can start hitting the ground running.”

“This year, I think we are a little more focused at this point of the season,” added Sorenson. “Last year, we were a little goofy and just had fun with it. This year, we feel like we have expectations to live up to.”

Homer’s defense was led by Logan Darling (2 tackles) and Ethan Knight (1 interception).

When asked about his interception, Knight said “It was a special thing, especially down the end-zone where I previously made a mistake. So it was a kind of mental clearance for me.”
