Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (September 14th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:

Varsity Cross Country: Cincinnatus vs. Tully & DeRuyter

The Cincinnatus Lions competed against Tully and DeRuyter at the Cincinnatus Fireman’s field. 

Here are some individual highlights of yesterday’s competition for both the Cincinnatus boys’ and girls’ cross country teams:

Cincinnatus Boys

  • Elijah Fuller finished 6th with a time of 22:23.
  • Connor Johnson came in 15th place with a time of 25:22.
  • Garrett Frink placed 16th with a time of 25:53. 

Cincinnatus Girls

  • Brooke Finn came in 6th with a time of 32:40. 
  • Shannon Ryan placed 8th with a time of 35:50.
  • Arianna Silva came in 9th with a time of 55:16.

Varsity Cross Country: Homer vs. Westhill

The Homer Trojans competed in a dual meet against Westhill Wednesday evening. 

The Homer boys’ team won with a team score of 39-19, while the Homer girls’ team also won with a team score of 37-21. 

Here are some individual highlights of yesterday’s competition for both the Homer boys’ and girls’ cross country teams:

Homer Boys 

  • Matt Fish finished 2nd with a time of 18:16. 
  • Christopher Boylan came in 7th with a time of 19:28. 
  • Anderson Lowell placed 8th with a time of 20:29. 

Homer Girls

  • Anna Aldrich placed 4th with a time of 22:24. 
  • Brayden Partigianoni came in 5th with a time of 22:37. 
  • Emma Rahner finished 6th with a time of 22:39. 

Varsity Boys Golf: Homer vs. Cazenovia

The Homer Trojans improved to a 4-1 record after beating Cazenovia with a team score of 216-273. (Reminder: Lowest score in golf wins).

Varsity Boys Golf: Cortland vs. East Syracuse Minoa (ESM) & Auburn

The Cortland Purple Tigers competed against both ESM and Auburn Wednesday afternoon. 

Cortland won the overall match between the three teams after scoring a team score of 205. ESM came in second with a team score of 270, while Auburn came in third with a score of 280. (Reminder: Lowest score in golf wins).

The Homer Lady Trojans lost in three sets against Marcellus, bringing them down to an overall record of 3-3. 

Homer was led by Lilly Sorenson (9 kills, 8 digs, 1 block & 1 ace), Madison Wethje (18 assists, 2 blocks & 4 digs), and Mallory Douglass (16 digs, 1 ace & 1 kill). 

Marcellus was led by Brynnly Goldsworthy (8 kills, 17 digs & 1 ace), Sarah Louer (8 kills & 18 digs), and Chloe Kuttruff (24 assists, 4 digs & 1 ace). 

Up next, Homer is scheduled to play Hamilton at home tonight (September 15th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Volleyball: Cortland vs. Central Square

The Cortland Lady Tigers fell to a 1-3 record after losing to Central Square in three sets. 

Throughout the match, Cortland was led by Nellie Lucas (11 assists, 10 digs & 3 aces), Aliza McCormick (4 kills, 6 digs, 2 aces & 1 assist), and Liv Magin (11 digs). 

Central Square was led by Audrey Tetrault (16 assists, 1 dig & 1 ace), Alexis Barker (4 kills, 2 aces, 1 assist & 1 dig), and Fiona Ames (5 kills & 1 dig). 

Cortland’s next game will be played at home against Johnson City on Monday (September 19th) at 7:15pm.

Varsity Girls Tennis: Homer vs. Phoenix

The Homer girls tennis team defeated Phoenix with an overall team score of 4-3 Wednesday evening. 

Here are the results of each match: 

  • First Singles: Homer’s Emma Effinger defeated Phoenix’s Brooke McCann  (6-0 & 6-0). 
  • Second Singles: Homer’s Georgia Wallis defeated Phoenix’s Gabrielle Reynolds (6-4 & 6-2).
  • Third Singles: Homer’s Molly Gallagher beat Phoenix’s Peyton Callahan (6-0 & 6-0). 
  • First Doubles: Homer’s Ginny Park and Georgianna Goodwin defeated Phoenix’s Sabrina Haynes and Mia Graham (6-2, 1-6 & 7-6).
  • Second Doubles: Homer’s Nina Svereika and Mackenzie Skodzinsky lost to Phoenix’s Elizabeth Bullis and Hayley Dygert (4-6 & 2-6). 
  • Third Doubles: Homer’s Cece Berkey and Isabelle Brown lost to Phoenix’s Claire Pritting and Sheriden Southworth (6-7, 7-6 & 6-7). 
  • Fourth Doubles: Homer’s Ava Bailey and Isabella Garcia lost to Phoenix’s Mattie Hunt and Carielys Calderon (0-6, 6-4 & 6-7). 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Marathon vs. Whitney Point

The Marathon Olympians improved to a 4-2 record after beating Whitney Point with a score of 9-0. 

Marathon was led by Kaiden Cornell (2 goals & 4 assists), Brittany Keller (2 goals & 1 assist), Bryce Hartman (1 goal), Jacob Byron (1 assist), Barrett Trabucco (1 assist), Colton Howe (1 goal), Tucker Trabucco (1 goal), Aydan Brown (1 assist), and Austin Poth (1 goal). 

Up next, Marathon will take on Dryden at home on Friday (September 16th) at 4:30pm.

The Cincinnatus Lions beat Otselic Valley 9-1 in order to improve to a 1-2 record Wednesday afternoon. 

Cincinnatus was led by Dominick Landers (4 goals & 1 assist), Canden Stafford (3 goals & 1 assist), Zack Streichert (1 goal & 1 assist), Caleb Baker (1 goal & 1 assist), Jack Stafford (2 assists), and Colton Maroney (1 assist). 

Otselic Valley was led by Braden Davis (1 goal), Ryatt Bilodeau (1 assist), and Caleb Loomis (8 saves). 

Cincinnatus is now scheduled to play Madison on the road on Friday (September 16th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: McGraw vs. Hamilton

The McGraw Eagles fell to a 5-1 record after losing their first game of the season against Hamilton with a score of 0-5. 

“Hamilton was better than us at every position tonight,” said McGraw Head Coach Jamey Crumb. “They are a very fast and physical team collectively, and we were out of shape all night. We didn't play near our best, but it's not a bad thing to get humbled once in a while.”

Hamilton’s goals were scored by Jimmy Daddio (1 goal), Landon Latella (1 goal), Peyton Werner (1 goal), Gavin Hames (1 goal), and Nico Hay (1 goal). 

McGraw goalkeeper Gabriel Kahle ended up making a total of 11 saves in the game, while Cooper Roy made 3 saves for Hamilton. 

McGraw will now look forward to getting back to their winning ways as they take on Otselic Valley on the road this Friday (September 16th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Otselic Valley

With this result, Cincinnatus improved their overall record to 2-0. 

Cincinnatus was led by Kyla Sustad (4 goals & 2 assists), Cassia Schuyler (3 goals), Lucy Finch (2 goals), Jarisa Temple (1 goal & 2 assists), Kaedence Latta (1 assist), Madelyn Pittsley (1 assist), and Mandi Waltz (1 assist). 

Otselic Valley’s only goal of the game was scored by Peyton Graham. 

Up next, Cincinnatus will host Madison on Friday (September 16th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: McGraw vs. Southern Cayuga

The McGraw Lady Eagles lost 0-1 against Southern Cayuga. With this loss, McGraw fell to a 2-2-1 record. 

McGraw goalkeeper made 2 saves in the game.

Varsity Field Hockey: Marathon vs. Spencer Van Etten (SVE)

The Marathon Lady Olympians beat SVE with a final score of 4-0 Wednesday afternoon. 

Marathon was led by Ellery Ensign (2 goals), Autumn Young (2 goals), Catherine Newkirk (3 assists), and Delaney Reilly (1 assist). 

With this win, Marathon improved their record to 4-2. 

The Lady Olympians are now scheduled to play Tioga Senior this Friday (September 16th) on the road at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Field Hockey: Homer vs. Cato-Meridian

The Homer field hockey team lost 0-6 against Cato-Meridian, bringing them down to an 0-4 record. 

Homer goalie Aislynn Cobb made 22 saves in the game. 

Cato-Meridian was led by Brianna Broadwell (2 goals & 1 assist), Ashlee Donahue (2 goals), Emma Neagle (2 assists), Morgan Janes (1 goal), Emma Griffin (1 goal), Bailey Planck (1 assist), and McKenna Morsdorf (5 saves). 

Up next, Homer will play Cortland on Friday (September 16th) at Cortland Jr/Sr High School. The game is scheduled to start at 5pm.
