Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (September 21st)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:

Varsity Volleyball: Cortland vs. Oswego

The Cortland Lady Tigers beat Oswego after five close sets at home Wednesday night. 

With this win, Cortland currently holds a 4-3 record. 

Cortland was led by Molly Steve (18 assists, 3 kills, 3 aces & 6 digs), Aliza McCormick (5 kills, 13 digs & 2 aces), and Andrea West (19 digs & 1 ace). 

Oswego was led by Alexa Kuzawski (10 kills & 2 aces), Trapasso Halia (10 assists, 3 digs & 3 aces), and Addison Stepien (16 digs & 1 kill). 

Up next, Cortland will play Jamesville-Dewitt next Tuesday (September 27th) on the road at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Cross Country: Homer vs. Marcellus

The Homer Trojans competed against Marcellus on the road Wednesday evening. 

According to Homer head coach Jim Baldwin, the Homer boys’ team lost the overall race 19-42 (Low score wins); while the Homer girls’ team won 15-50. 

Here are some individual highlights of both the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams (each race was 5,000 meters long): 

Homer Boys

  • Matt Fish finished 2nd with a time of 20:29. 
  • Chris Boylan came in 8th place with a time of 21:37. 

Homer Girls

  • Anna Aldrich won 1st place with a time of 24:09.
  • Emma Rahner came in 3rd place with a time of 25:26.
  • Alyssa Swayze finished 4th with a time of 25:57. 
  • Maggie Mahunik placed 5th with a time of 26:45.

Varsity Cross Country: Cincinnatus vs. Onondaga Central & LaFayette

The Cincinnatus Lions competed against Onondaga Central & LaFayette Wednesday evening. 

Here are some individual highlights of both the Cincinnatus boys’ and girls’ teams (each race was 3.1 miles long): 

Cincinnatus Boys

  • Elijah Fuller placed 4th with a time of 21:15. 
  • Connor Johnson came in 6th with a time of 22:23.

Cincinnatus Girls

  • Brooke Finn placed 8th with a time of 31:00.

Varsity Girls Soccer: Marathon vs. Union Springs

The Marathon Lady Olympians lost to Union Springs with a close score of 2-3 on the road Thursday night. 

With this result, Marathon has fallen to a 3-4 record. 

Marathon was led by Kennedy Eaton (1 goal), Anna Hoyt (1 goal), and Breya VanDee (1 assist). 

Union Springs was led by Gabby Scholz (2 goals), Nicole Namisniak (1 assist), and Danielle Waldron (1 goal).

Up next, Marathon will host Southern Cayuga on Friday (September 23rd) at 4:30pm.
