A Cortland man attempted to escape the emergency room after he was arrested in connection to an incident on Homer Avenue Wednesday, according to a city police report.

The report noted that Travis M. Hartwick, 31, allegedly assaulted a female victim, while also violating an order of protection in the process.

When city police officers arrived on scene, the victim was discovered with injuries. The victim, who was previously in a relationship with Hartwick, “refused to pursue” assault charges against Hartwick, the report states.

Hartwick was arrested due to the incident. The report notes that as officers drove Hartwick to the city police department, he “became unresponsive,” which led to officers rerouting to the Guthrie Cortland Medical Center emergency room.

Officers detained Hartwick in the ER. Hartwick then became responsive and “attempted to flee the hospital,” the report notes. Hartwick attempted to run out the ER entrance, but officers halted his escape attempt.

Hartwick was charged with first-degree criminal contempt in violating an order of protection, and aggravated family offense (both Class-E Felonies); and second-degree attempted escape (a Class-A Misdemeanor).

Hartwick was arraigned and sent to county jail without bail. He is slated to appear in city court on Oct. 12.
