Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (October 6th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Boys Soccer: Homer vs. Marcellus

The Homer Trojans lost 0-2 on the road against Marcellus Thursday night. With this loss, Homer has fallen to a 5-5-2 record. 

Marcellus was led by Connor Ciota (1 goal), Landon Kelly (1 goal), and William Kershaw (1 assist). 

Homer goalkeeper Braydon Fox recorded 22 saves in the game, while Robert Bartolotta and Rory Wiley made 8 combined saves for Marcellus. 

Up next, Homer will play at home against Westhill on Tuesday (October 11th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Cazenovia

The Cincinnatus Lions fell to an overall record of 6-5-1 after losing to Cazenovia with a final score of 1-2. 

Cincinnatus was led by Jack Stafford (1 goal), Joshua Roberts (1 assist), and Dakota Stairs (6 saves). 

Cazenovia was led by Sully Clarke (1 goal), JD Dolly (1 goal), and Jacob Szalach (5 saves). 

Cincinnatus is now scheduled to play at home against Madison on Friday (October 7th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Marathon vs. Union Springs

The Marathon Olympians defeated Union Springs with a final score of 5-0 in order to improve their overall record to 11-2-1. 

Marathon was led by Jacob Byron (1 goal), Kaiden Cornel (1 goal & 2 assists), Bryce Hartman (2 goals & 1 assist), Austin Poth (1 goal), Aydan Brown (1 assist), and Julian Spizzirri (2 saves). 

Note: stats for Union Springs were not available by the time this article was written. 

Up next, Marathon will play Edmeston Central at home on Friday (October 7th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Homer vs. Marcellus

The Homer Lady Trojans lost 0-2 against Marcellus at home Thursday night. 

With this loss, Homer now holds a 4-7-2 record. 

Homer was led by Catherine Apker (7 saves) and Alex Kellaway (3 saves). 

Marcellus was led by Lexie Fragnito (1 goal & 1 assist), Cece Powell (1 goal), and Josephine Leubner (8 saves). 

Homer will now play Westhill on the road this upcoming Tuesday (October 11th) at 5:30pm. 

Varsity Volleyball: Cortland vs. Fulton

The Cortland Tigers lost in three sets against Fulton Thursday night.

With this loss, Cortland has fallen to a 5-7 record. 

Cortland was led by Aaliyah Henley-Amey (5 kills, 4 digs & 1 assist), Molly Steve (1 kill, 11 assists, 8 digs & 1 ace), and Brenna Hogan (5 kills & 3 digs). 

Fulton was led by Natalie Frost (9 kills, 2 aces, 2 digs & 1 block) and Sydney Sachel (18 assists, 3 kills, 2 aces & 5 digs). 

Up next, Cortland will play Central Square on the road on Tuesday (October 11th) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Volleyball: Homer vs. Syracuse ITC

The Homer Trojans defeated Syracuse ITC in three sets to improve to a 7-5 record. 

Homer was led by Mallory Douglass (12 kills & 10 digs), Madison Wethje (19 assists, 2 aces, 2 digs & 2 kills), and Mackenzie Hubbard (12 aces, 3 kills & 6 digs). 

Note: Stats for Syracuse ITC were not available by the time this article was written. 

Homer is now scheduled to play Westhill on Thursday (October 13th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Boys Golf: Homer vs. Westhill

The Homer Trojans beat Westhill with a close team score of 211-213. (Reminder: lowest score in golf wins).

Varsity Cross Country: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams. 

The Marathon Olympians competed in the Bob Greene/Newark Valley Invitational Thursday afternoon. 

Here are some highlights of both the Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams: 

Marathon Boys

  • Andrew Edsall finished 38th with a time of 19:49.9
  • Blake Birdsall came in 56th with a time of 20:23.0

Marathon Girls

  • Rylee Thomas placed 93rd with a time of 27:41.2
  • Larina Cochran came in 95th with a time of 28:09.3
