Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (October 7th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s events:

Varsity Boys Soccer: Marathon vs. Edmeston Central

The Marathon Olympians defeated Edmeston Central with a score of 3-2 Friday evening. 

“It was a hard fought game,” said Marathon Head Coach Aubrey Brown. “We came out slow, they came out tough. They got a 1-0 lead at halftime, so I told the boys that we were not playing like we should be. We then came out flat on that second half, and gave up that second goal; but after that, the boys got going and got the result we wanted.” 

Marathon was led by Brittan Keller (1 goal), Jacob Byron (1 goal), Bode Carter (1 goal), and Julian Spizzirri (2 saves). 

Edmeston Central was led by Gunner Schoellig (1 goal) and Gavin McEnroe (1 goal). 

With this win, Marathon ended the regular season with an overall record of 12-2-1

Up next, Marathon will wait to see who they will be facing in the first round of the Section IV playoff tournament. According to the Section IV website, there will be a seeding meeting on Wednesday (October 12th).

Varsity Boys Soccer: McGraw vs. Otselic Valley

The McGraw Eagles improved to an overall record of 10-3 after beating Otselic Valley with a final score of 4-2. 

McGraw was led by Nathan Stiles (3 goals) and Jaydon Bassett (1 goal). 

Otselic Valley was led by Braden Davis (2 goals). 

McGraw will now play at home against Stockbridge Valley on Tuesday (October 11th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Madison

The Cincinnatus Lions beat Madison 3-1 at home Friday afternoon. 

With this win, Cincinnatus now holds a 7-5-1 record. 

Cincinnatus was led by Zack Streichert (1 goal), John Schuyler (1 goal), and Trevor Shevalier (1 goal). 

Madison’s only goal of the game was scored by Zach Canning. 

Cincinnatus is now scheduled to play Brookfield at home this upcoming Tuesday (October 11th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: McGraw vs. Otselic Valley

The McGraw Lady Eagles tied 1-1 against Otselic Valley on the road Friday evening. 

McGraw was led by Adrianna Stacconi (1 goal), Megan Stull (1 assist), and Heather Magee (10 saves). 

Otselic Valley was led by Rachel Loomis (1 goal). 

With this result, McGraw now holds a 3-9-2 record. 

Up next, McGraw will play on the road against Stockbridge Valley on Tuesday (October 11th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Madison

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions improved their unbeaten record to 12-0 after beating Madison with a final score of 4-0. 

Cincinnatus was led by Ava Larrabee (2 goals), Peyton Stith (1 goal), and Kyla Sustad (1 goal). 

Note: individual stats for Madison were not available by the time this article was written. 

Cincinnatus will now take on Brookfield on the road this upcoming Tuesday (October 11th) at 4:30pm.

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cortland vs. Jamesville-Dewitt

The Cortland Tigers lost 1-3 against Jamesville-Dewitt, bringing their overall record down to 3-8-1. 

Jamesville-Dewitt was led by Megan Baker (2 goals) and Katharine Callahan (1 goal). 

Cortland’s only goal of the game was scored by Mallory Turner

Up next, Cortland will play on the road against Auburn on Tuesday (October 11th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Football: Homer vs. Indian River

The Homer Trojans lost their first game of the season against Indian River with a score of 14-36 on Friday. 

With this loss, Homer now holds a 4-1 record. 

Homer’s points were scored by Sam Sorenson (1 rushing touchdown & 1 receiving touchdown), Wyatt Wilbur (1 touchdown pass), and Laramy Velasquez-Ramirez  (2 extra point kicks). 

Indian River’s points were scored by Connor McMahon (1 touchdown run & 1 two-point conversion), Kane Lynch (2 touchdown runs), and Derek Jones (2 touchdown runs & 2 two-point conversions).  

Homer is now scheduled to host Westhill on Saturday (October 15th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Field Hockey: Homer vs. Weedsport

The Homer Lady Trojans lost a tough game against Weedsport with a score of 1-3. 

Homer was led by Molly McMasters (1 goal), Leah Bouwens (1 assist), and Hannah Bouwens (6 saves). 

Weedsport was led by Kayla Flask (1 goal), Keegan McNabb (1 goal), Gabriella Jeffers (1 goal), Mallory Brown (1 goal), and Arieanna Giacolone (3 saves). 

With this loss, Homer has fallen to a 1-10-1 record. 

This was Homer’s last scheduled game of the season.
