Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (October 11th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Field Hockey: Marathon vs. Windsor

The Marathon Lady Olympians lost 0-2 against Windsor, bringing their record down to 8-8 on Tuesday. 

This was Marathon’s last scheduled game of the regular season. 

Up next, the Lady Olympians will look forward to playing in the Section IV Class D Sectional Tournament.

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cortland vs. Auburn

The Cortland Tigers lost 1-2 against Auburn at home Tuesday night. With this loss, Cortland currently holds a 2-13 record. 

Cortland was led by David Kelchner (1 goal), Caden Albright (1 assist), and Paul Hansen (17 saves). 

Auburn was led by Ian Deyo (1 goal), Thomas Deming (1 goal), Noah Coleman (1 assist), and Miles Baroody (7 saves). 

Up next, Cortland will play Central Square on the road this Thursday (October 13th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Homer vs. Westhill

The Homer Trojans lost 0-2 against Westhill, bringing their record down to 5-6-2 on Tuesday. 

Westhill was led by Ian Centore (1 goal) and Emmet Starowicz (1 goal). 

Homer was led by Brayden Fox (16 saves). 

Homer will now host Mexico this Thursday (October 13th) at 7pm.  

Varsity Boys Soccer: McGraw vs. Stockbridge Valley

The McGraw Eagles fell to an overall record of 10-4 after losing to Stockbridge Valley with a final score of 0-3. 

Stockbridge Valley was led by Riley LaLonde (2 goals & 1 assist), Evan Enslow (1 goal), Ben Jantzi (1 assist), and Braden Renner (3 saves). 

McGraw was led by Gabriel Kahle (3 saves). 

“We played much better this time around compared to our first matchup,” said McGraw Head Coach Jamey Crumb. “We went into the half down 1-0 but we actually may have out played them a majority of that half. They scored early into the second half and that kind of took the wind out of our sails. We still created some decent chances but still never got to test their Keeper. They are a good team and could be dangerous in sectionals in class C. We have the opportunity to learn from a few mistakes we made and correct them before Friday.” 

McGraw’s next game is scheduled to be played on Friday (October 14th) at 4:30pm against Cincinnatus. The game will be played at McGraw High School.

The Cincinnatus Lions won 9-0 against Brookfield in order to improve their record to an 8-5-1 record. 

Cincinnatus was led by Dominick Landers (3 goals & 1 assist), Canden Stafford (2 goals & 1 assist), Ace Eckert (1 goal), Jack Stafford (3 assists), Niles Herline (1 assist), John Schuyler (1 assist), Tucker Latta (1 goal & 1 assist), Trevor Shevalier (1 goal & 1 assist), and Koda Temple (1 goal). 

Note: stats for Brookfield were not available by the time this article was written. 

Up next, Cincinnatus will play McGraw on the road this Friday (October 14th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cortland vs. Auburn

The Cortland Lady Tigers defeated Auburn with a final score of 5-0. 

With this win, Cortland now holds a 4-8-1 record. 

Cortland was led by Mallory Turner (2 goals), Lilly Call (1 goal & 2 assists), Zoe Timmerman (1 goal), Maude Terwilliger (1 goal), Valerosa Gambitta (1 assist), Lauren Mott (7 saves), and Claire Turner (2 saves). 

“Despite getting off to a slow start, Cortland played much better possession soccer in the second half of the game,” said Cortland Head Coach Ilona Ryon. “Cortland had many early chances, but Auburn's goalie was in good positioning to scoop up the ball.”

Cortland will now play at home against Syracuse United this Thursday (October 14th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Homer vs. Westhill

Homer was led by Catherine Apker (1 goal), Elena Barrett (1 assist), and Alex Kellaway (15 saves). 

Westhill was led by Elle Herrera (2 goals), Hannah Goodness (1 goal), Lizzie Horner (1 save), and Kate Bendall (1 save). 

With this loss, Homer has fallen to a 4-8-2 record.

Up next, Homer will take on Manlius-Pebble Hill at home this Thursday (October 13th) at 5pm.

Stockbridge Valley was led by Aspen Koehl (1 goal), Abby Reed (1 goal), Lindsay Stemburg (1 goal), and Abby Jacobs (3 saves). 

McGraw will now play Cincinnatus on the road this Thursday (October 13th) at 4:30pm.

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions beat Brookfield 14-0 in order to improve their unbeaten record to 13-0. 

Cincinnatus was led by Kyla Sustad (5 goals & 4 assists), Cassia Schuyler (4 goals & 1 assist), Madelyn Pittsley (2 goals & 2 assists), Jarisa Temple (2 goals & 2 assists), and Ava Larrabee (1 goal & 1 assist).

With this loss, Cortland has fallen to an overall record of 5-8. 

Cortland was led by Aliza McCormick (8 kills, 16 digs & 1 assist), Molly Steve (4 kills, 11 assists & 8 digs), and Aaliyah Henley-Amey (1 ace, 2 kills, 3 assists & 10 digs). 

Central Square was led by Emerson Widowski (8 kills, 7 digs & 1 block), Fiona Ames (11 kills & 3 digs), and Audrey Tetrault (5 aces, 23 assists & 6 digs). 

Cortland is now scheduled to host Auburn on Thursday (October 13th) at 6pm.
