Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (October 13th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cortland vs. Central Square

The Cortland Tigers lost 0-7 against Central Square Thursday night. With this loss, Cortland has fallen to an overall record of 2-14. 

Central Square’s goals were scored by Patrick Johns (3 goals), Aidan Howard (1 goal), Max Peters (1 goal), Ben Russell (1 goal), and Gavin Ribarovski (1 goal). 

Cortland goalkeeper Liam Burns made 15 saves in the game, while Jack Converse and Andrew Watrous combined to make 3 saves for Central Square. 

This was Cortland’s last scheduled game of the season. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Homer vs. Mexico

The Homer Trojans lost 2-3 on senior night against Mexico on Thursday. 

With this loss, Homer now holds a 5-7-2 record. 

Homer was led by Lance Heyer (1 goal), Tyler Van Etten (2 assists), and Brayden Fox (1 goal & 4 saves). 

Note: stats for Mexico were not available by the time this article was written. 

Up next, Homer will wait to see who they will be facing in the Section III Class B Playoff Tournament.

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cortland vs. Syracuse City

The Cortland Lady Tigers won 1-0 against Syracuse City at home Thursday evening. 

With this win, Cortland now holds an overall record of 5-8-1. 

Cortland was led by Quinn Dodds (1 goal) and Lilly Call (1 assist). 

Cortland goalkeeper Lauren Mott made 10 saves in the game, while Desaree Gaston recorded 5 saves for Syracuse City. 

Cortland will play their last scheduled game of the regular season on the road against Chittenango this Saturday (October 15th) at 2:30pm. 

According to Cortland Head Coach Ilona Ryon, if Cortland wins their upcoming game against Chittenango, they will qualify to play in the sectional tournament. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Homer vs. Manlius-Pebble Hill

The Homer Lady Trojans celebrated senior night with an 8-0 win over Manlius-Pebble Hill Thursday night. 

With this win, Homer now holds a 5-9-2 record. 

Homer was led by Catherine Apker (2 goals, 2 assists & 1 save), Jane Gugerty (2 goals), Camdyn Cole (1 goal & 1 assist), Bre Romans (1 goal), Elena Barrett (1 goal), Sandra Roberts (1 goal), Emily McCracken (1 assist), and Alex Kellaway (5 saves). 

According to Homer coach Ben Bowers, if Homer wins their upcoming game against Syracuse City on the road on Friday (October 14th), they will qualify to play in the sectional tournament. Homer’s game vs. Syracuse City will kickoff at 6pm.

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. McGraw

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions beat the McGraw Lady Eagles with a final score of 11-1. 

With this result, Cincinnatus improved their unbeaten record to 14-0, while McGraw fell to 3-10-2. 

Cincinnatus was led by Kyla Sustad (7 goals & 1 assist), Harmony Loomis (1 goal), Jarisa Temple (1 goal & 1 assist), Kaedence Latta (1 assist), Mandi Waltz (1 assist), Cassia Schuyler (1 goal & 2 assists), and Payton Gerrard (1 goal). 

McGraw was led by Emma Marshall (1 goal). 

Up next, Cincinnatus will play Sandy Creek on the road on Friday (October 14th) at 5:30pm. 

This was McGraw’s last scheduled game of the season. 

Varsity Volleyball: Homer vs. Westhill

The Homer volleyball team lost in three sets against Westhill, making them fall to an overall record of 7-6. 

Homer was led by Madison Wethje (16 assists, 6 digs, 2 kills & 2 aces), Mallory Douglass (4 kills, 1 ace & 13 digs), and Lilly Sorenson (3 kills, 1 assist & 12 digs). 

Westhill was led by Janiah Robinson (9 kills & 6 blocks) and Ava Baty (4 aces, 25 assists, 1 kill, 1 block & 6 digs). 

Homer is scheduled to play Cortland at Homer High School this Friday (October 14th) at 6pm.

The Cortland Tigers defeated Auburn in three sets Thursday night in order to improve to a 6-8 record. 

Cortland was led by Aliza McCormick (7 kills, 3 assists & 11 digs), Molly Steve (5 aces, 4 kills, 10 assists & 9 digs), and Olivia Magin (13 digs, 2 assists & 1 ace). 

Auburn was led by Avianna Ming (4 kills, 2 aces & 6 digs) and Kirsten Casterline (2 kills, 7 assists, 1 ace, 2 blocks & 3 digs). 

Up next, Cortland is scheduled to play Homer on the road this Friday (October 14th) at 6pm.
