Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (October 18th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Girls Soccer: Marathon vs. Margaretville (Sectionals)

The #4 seeded Marathon Lady Olympians defeated Margaretville (#13 seed) in the first round of the Section IV Class D Playoff Tournament Tuesday evening. 

Marathon won the game with a final score of 3-1. 

Marathon was led by Kennedy Eaton (2 goals), Marissa Allen (1 goal), Abigail Ensign (2 assists), and Addison Oram (1 assist). 

Margaretville’s only goal of the game was scored by Samantha Von Bernewitz. 

Up next Marathon will host Charlotte Valley (#12 seed) in the quarterfinal round of the sectional tournament on Friday (October 21st) at 3:30pm.

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cortland vs. Hannibal (Sectionals)

The #7 seeded Cortland Tigers lost with a close score of 1-2 against Hannibal (#10 seed) in the first round of the Section III Class B Playoff Tournament. 

Cortland was led by Maude Terwilliger (1 goal), Valerosa Gambitta (1 assist), and Lauren Mott (7 saves). 

Hannibal was led by Amber Clarke (2 goals), Lena Turaj (1 assist), Brooke West (1 assist), and Sophia Salladin (9 saves). 

With this loss, Cortland ended their season with an overall record of 6-9-1.

Varsity Girls Soccer: Homer vs. Central Valley (Sectionals)

The #15 seeded Homer Lady Trojans lost 0-9 against Central Valley (#2 seed) in the first round of the Section III Class B Playoff Tournament. 

Central Valley’s goals were scored by Krista Panko (3 goals), Sophia Watkins (2 goals), Izzy Terzioski, (2 goals), Bella Kleban (1 goal), and Megan Canipe (1 goal).

With this result, Homer ended their season with a 6-9-2 record. 

Varsity Volleyball: Cortland vs. Oswego

The Cortland Lady Tigers defeated Oswego after five close sets in order to improve to an overall record of 7-8. 

Cortland was led by Molly Steve (4 kills, 14 assists, 14 digs, 4 aces & 1 block), Aliza McCormick (7 kills, 2 assists & 14 digs), and Olivia Magin (1 kill, 2 aces & 11 digs). 

Note: Stats for Oswego were not available by the time this article was written. 

Up next, Cortland will play Homer on the road on Wednesday (October 19th) at 6pm.
