A trio of Homer High School student-athletes signed letters of intent during National Signing Day on Wednesday.

Sam Sorenson penned his intent with the Army-West Point wrestling team, a Division I program competing in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association. Catherine Apker is heading to LaFayette College, a Division I school competing in the Patriot League, to play women’s soccer. Mitchell Riter will tee off with the Assumption University men’s golf squad, a Division II program.

Sorenson knew right away that Army-West Point would be his next journey in life.

“I went down there and I loved the campus,” Sorenson said, noting he plans to attend a West Point prep school before entering his freshman year with the Black Knights. “It was like a history museum on a college campus. I knew right away I wanted to go to West Point.”

Apker said she chose LaFayette College for “the people,” noting how she enjoyed meeting the faculty, coaches and players.

“I just loved the campus and the whole environment,” she added.

Riter recently visited Assumption University and played a round of golf with members of the men’s golf squad, and met with coaches.

“They’re all super nice and the school is amazing,” he added, noting the Greyhounds recently capturing the Northeast-10 conference title also played into his decision.

Riter plans to major in accounting and finance at Assumption. Sorenson and Apker are both currently undecided on their majors.
