Cincinnatus Lady Lions Lose Heartbreaking Class D State Championship Game vs. Mount Academy (Photos Included)

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions lost a close game to Mount Academy in the Class D State Championship Finals Sunday afternoon. 

Cincinnatus lost the game with a score of 1-3 at Cortland High School. 

Both teams came into the game with undefeated records. According to the New York State Sportswriter Association, prior to the game, Cincinnatus was ranked second in the state for Class D; while Mount Academy was ranked first.

Cincinnatus was led by Jarisa Temple (1 goal), Kyla Sustad (1 assist), and Gabriella Taylor (11 saves). 

Mount Academy’s three goals were scored by Brooke Huleatt and Kayley Huleatt in the last 20 minutes of the game. 

“It was a little frustrating that it didn’t end the way we wanted it to,” said Cicninnatus head coach Lisa Sustad.

With this result, Cincinnatus ended their season with an overall record of 21-1.

When asked about how she felt about preparing for next year’s season, coach Sustad said, “we’re losing five seniors, so we are going to have some younger players coming up. We’re going to have to figure some things out, but I think that we’re going to be strong for a really long time with some really great girls.”
