The City of Cortland Common Council unanimously voted to approve Blue Moose Sanitation, Inc. as the new and upcoming trash and recycling service in the city.

At Tuesday’s meeting, the vote included amending chapter 241 of the city code, relative to solid waste and collection, which has Blue Moose as the new provider.

A breakdown of the new local law amending the chapter in the city code can be seen here under item No. 2 of Tuesday’s meeting agenda.

The new trash and recycling service will officially begin on Jan. 2, 2023. Totes, along with recycling bins, will be delivered at the end of this month to residents who have opted in to the city’s service. Cortland department of public works superintendent Nic Dovi noted the large totes will hold up 95 gallons of trash, while the smaller totes handle 68 gallons.

City mayor Scott Steve noted it will “take some time” for residents to get used to the new totes.

“It’ll be somewhat of a rough road, but long-term it’s going to be a better quality of life for all of us (in terms of trash and recycling service),” he added.

With the new service in the distance, each councilperson said they have received a slew of questions from residents within their wards about how the service will run. This prompted Mayor Steve to create a page on the city’s website that provides frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the upcoming service.

A rundown of the FAQs page, with answers attached to each question, can be accessed at the top of the city’s website. A direct link to the trash and recycling FAQs page is here.

Steve noted the goal is to mail a postcard that includes a QR code with a direct link to the FAQs page.

The city has also developed an email, [email protected], if residents have any further questions, concerns or requests for information that was not provided in the FAQs page.

“If somebody wants to opt out or communicate with us that way, they can just use this email address,” Steve said, noting residents can also call 607-753-0872 for any questions or concerns.
