As the holiday season approaches, the Cortland County Sheriff’s office is warning of potential donation or gift card scams that indirectly involve local law enforcement agencies.

The County Sheriff’s Office noted in a recent Facebook post that local law enforcement agencies will not reach out to the public and have them pay money “directly or request to be paid” with any sort of gift card or donation.

The sheriff’s office is asking residents not to give out personal information on the phone with any unfamiliar business or individual. Those who become a victim of a scam are urged to contact their local law enforcement agency.
