The city of Cortland will raise dog license fees, effective Jan. 1 of next year.

The Cortland Common Council unanimously voted on the measure at last week’s meeting. According to the resolution under item five of the agenda, the last time the city changed its dog license fees was in 2011.

Starting in the new year, altered (spayed/neutered) dog license fees will include a $10 charge from the city and a $1 state surcharge ($11 in total). For unaltered (not spayed/neutered) dog licenses, the fees will rise to $20 from the city and $3 from the state ($23 in total).

The resolution noted that the New York State Agriculture and Markets Law Section 110(3) requires all municipalities issuing dog licenses to collect surcharges of $1 for altered dogs and $3 for unaltered dogs.

The funds are then remitted to the State Department of Agriculture and Markets for deposit in the animal population control fund. The $5 in additional fees that will begin in the New Year, which is estimated to total around $850, will be allocated to the Central New York and Neuter Assistance Program (CNY SNAP).

The current dog license fees are at $7.50 for an altered dog and $18 for an unaltered dog. According to the resolution, the city – year-to-date – has issued 733 altered dog licenses ($5,500) and over 150 unaltered dog licenses ($2,800).
