Paul Quinlan has been involved in local hockey for a handful of years, both as a player and a coach.

After being the Cortland-Homer boys hockey assistant coach since the 2014-15 season, Quinlan has stepped into this season at the helm, with the Eagles currently riding an undefeated record in the early going of the 2022-23 campaign.

“This year, I was able to take the job and I’ve been going ever since. I’m really excited,” he said.

A Cortland High School Class of 2000 graduate, Quinlan played soccer, hockey and baseball for the Purple Tigers. He went on to play soccer at St. John Fisher College, graduating in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in management (with a concentration in marketing) in the process.

Quinlan then moved to Los Angeles with his then-girlfriend, now wife, for a year-and-a-half. The couple moved back to Cortland when his brother-in-law was born.

Aside from taking the reins of the Cortland-Homer squad, Quinlan has been involved with the local youth hockey programs since 2010. He is currently part of the coaching staff for the local U-8, U-10, U-12 and U-18 teams.

Quinlan is even coaching his own children, noting his families’ love for hockey.

“We’re trying to develop them. I love being at the rink, meeting the families and being friends with them,” he said.

For this season’s Eagles’ hockey team, Quinlan noted he is “lucky” to have 13 seniors.

“From day one when I was announced the head coach, they were locked into everything we’ve talked about,” he added. “They’ve acted on everything I’ve asked of them and they want to be part of it.”

Quinlan mentioned his coaching staff is able to match the energy of the players.

“We’re right up there (with the players). We get just as excited as they do,” he said. “(The players) have responded well to it.”

As the 2022-23 season continues to roll on, Quinlan noted his excitement “for this group and about this group.”

“Their commitment is paying off,” he said.
