City of Cortland Police: Man Charged with Attempted Murder Following Shooting Incident on Main Street

On Friday December 16, 2022 at approximately 1:06 PM, Officers from the City of Cortland Police Department responded to 109 Main Street for a reported person who had been shot. A 30 year old female who lives in an apartment at 109 Main Street called 911 and reported being shot in the neck. 

Upon arrival officers found the victim conscious and alert sitting on the stair landing on the third floor of 109 Main Street. The victim had a single gun shot wound to her face and neck. The victim identified the person who shot her as Tyshawn Pittman, an acquaintance and resident of 109 Main Street Apartment 4. At the time, Pittman’s whereabouts were unknown. The Cortland Fire Department tended to the victim while officers secured a perimeter outside of Pittman’s apartment. The victim was transported by TLC ambulance to a trauma center in Syracuse, NY. Her wound was not life threatening. The Cortland County Emergency Communications Center alerted the public of the incident, a security perimeter was established around the scene, and buildings in the area were evacuated. With the assistance of a NYS Police drone, the Cortland Tactical Response Team entered and search Pittman’s apartment. He was not inside the apartment.  

The Cortland Police Department was assisted in this investigation by the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department, NYS Police, Cortland Fire Department, NYSW Railroad Police, TLC Ambulance and the Cortland County District Attorney. Officers utilized tips from the public, surveillance cameras in the area, and cell phone tracking technology to locate Pitman. At about 7:00 PM the Cortland Tactical Response Team located Pittman in an apartment on the third floor of 89 Main Street. He was taken into custody and transported to the Cortland Police Department for processing. The handgun utilized in the shooting was located in the apartment.  

Tyshawn G. Pittman is 37 years of age. He resides at 109 Main Street Apartment 4. He was charged with:

  • Attempted Murder in the Second Degree (Class B Felony)
  • Assault in the First Degree (Class B Felony)
  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon (2nd Degree Class C Felony)

Pittman was arraigned in the Cortland City Court at about 9:30 PM. He was remanded to the Cortland County Jail on $250,000 cash bail, $500,000 secured bond, or $1,000,000 bail bond. He is scheduled to re-appear in Cortland City Court on December 21, 2022 at 10:00 PM.

The victim was treated and released from the trauma center in Syracuse NY. On December 16, 2022.
