Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (December 29th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland, Homer, & Marathon vs. Multiple Schools (Snowman Showdown Meet)

Cortland, Homer, and Marathon competed in the varsity “Snowman Showdown” meet against multiple schools on Thursday. 

Here are some highlights from all Cortland, Homer, and Marathon boys’ & girls’ teams:

Cortland

Boys

  • Jack Phelan won 1st place in the 55 meter dash (Time - 6.93) as well as in the triple jump event (Result - 37’4.5”), and the long jump event (Result - 18’10.25”)
  • Joe Banewicz placed 4th in the 600 meter run (Time - 1:53.17)
  • Christian VanPatten finished 6th in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 6:43.09)
  • Duncan Harbin won 1st place in the shot put event (Result - 40’6”)
  • Bryan Honan placed 2nd in the shot put event (Result - 38’7”)
  • Mick Maloney placed 2nd in the triple jump event (Result - 29’2.75”)

Girls 

  • Olivia Magin finished 2nd in the 1,000 meter run (Time - 3:57.03)
  • Bailey Dintino won 1st place in the 55 meter dash (Time - 7.98)
  • Campbell Bush placed 3rd in the 55 meter hurdles (Time - 10.14)
  • Sarah Williams came in 4th place in the 55 meter hurdles (Time - 10.73)
  • Ruby Mullally finished 3rd in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 6:04.32)
  • Lillian Call won 1st place in the 300 meter dash (Time - 44.26)
  • Rileigh Madden placed 2nd in the pole vault event (Result - 6’6”)
  • Morgann Doane placed 4th in the triple jump event (Result - 29’8.75”)

Homer

Boys

  • Damian Brown won 1st place in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 5:16.27). He also came in 2nd place in the 1,000 meter run (Time - 3:09.08)
  • Jonah Campos placed 5th in the 1,000 meter run (Time - 3:42.52). He also placed 4th in the shot put even (Result - 35’10.25”)
  • Aiden Small placed 5th in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 6:27.45). He also came in 6th in the 1,000 meter run (Time - 3:43.80)
  • Gunnar Tyrrell placed 6th in the 55 meter dash (Time - 7.40)
  • Cooper Van Dee won 1st place in the 300 meter run (Time - 39.49). He also placed 4th in the long jump event (Result 18’1.75”)
  • Nicholas Costa placed 3rd in the 300 meter run (Time - 41.05)
  • Gunnar Tyrrell placed 3rd in the high jump event (Result - 4’11”)
  • Logan Darling placed 5th in the shot put event (Result - 33’11”)

Girls

  • Haley Tucker finished 3rd in the 1,000 meter run (Time -3:59.86)
  • Maggie Mahunik came in 5th place in the 1,000 meter run (Time - 4:01.47)
  • Camdyn Cole came in 2nd in the 55 meter dash (Time - 8.01)
  • Ingrid Aagaard won 1st place in the 600 meter run (Time - 1:52.11). She also came in 3rd in the 300 meter run (Time - 46.51)
  • Jane Gugerty came in 2nd in the 55 meter hurdles (Time - 10.11) as well as in the long jump event (Result - 15’0.25”)
  • Emma Effinger placed 4th in the 300 meter run (Time - 48.25)
  • Caitlin McCloy finished 5th in the 300 meter run (Time - 48.46). She also placed 6th in the long jump event (Result - 12’8.75”)
  • Molly McMasters placed 5th in the shot put event (Result - 24’9”)

Marathon

Boys

  • Robert Anderson won 1st place in the 600 meter run (Time - 1:38.27). He also came in 4th in the 300 meter run (Time - 42.72)
  • Landon Barnhart placed 2nd in the 600 meter run (Time - 1:46.98)
  • Andrew Edsall placed 2nd in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 5:31.25)

Girls

  • Abigail Edsall finished 6th in the 1,000 meter run (Time - 4:01.95)
  • Nora Prestigiacomo came in 6th in the 600 meter run (Time - 2:10.22)
  • Abigail Trabucco won 1st place in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 5:47.22) and in the pole vault event (Result - 8’0”). She also came in 6th in the 300 meter run (Time - 48.63)
  • Rylee Thomas placed 5th in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 6:46.37)

Varsity Ice Hockey: Cortland-Homer vs. Cazenovia (Cortland-Homer Holiday Tournament)

The Cortland-Homer Golden Eagles won the Holiday Tournament at the JM McDonald Sports Complex after defeating Cazenovia 8-2. 

Cortland-Homer was led by Mitch Riter (4 goals & 1 assist), Andrew Partigianoni (2 goals & 2 assists), Chris Yang (2 assists), Hunter Everle (2 assists), Finn Thomas (1 goal), Ryan Spalding (1 goal & 1 assist), Tucker Gabriel (1 assist), and Lucas Farris (2 assists). 

Cazenovia was led by Shamus Newcomb (1 goal), Bryson Weaver (1 assist), Jack Casey (1 goal), and Forrest Ives (1 assist). 

Up next, Cortland-Homer is scheduled to take on Christian Brothers Academy-Dewitt on the road this upcoming Wednesday (January 4th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Cortland vs. Moravia (Tom Neugebauer Holiday Tournament)

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost 44-63 against Moravia in the championship round of the “Tom Neugebauer Holiday Tournament” Thursday night.

Cortland was led by Benjamin McGrath (10 points) and Antonio Terrazas (7 points).

Moravia was led by Joe Baylor (15 points), Abram Wasileski (13 points), and Kyler Proper (13 points).

With this loss, Cortland has fallen to an overall record of 3-2. 

Cortland’s next game will be played on the road against Jamesville-Dewitt on Tuesday (January 3rd) at 6:45pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Homer vs. Solvay (Black Knight Holiday Classic)

The Homer Trojans defeated Solvay in the consolation game of the “Black Knight Holiday Classic” Tournament at Tully High School with a score of 49-38. 

Homer was led by Evan Butts (20 points), Izaiah Beard (10 points), and Kaden Durham (10 points).

Note: stats for Solvay were not available by the time this article was written.

With this win, Homer now holds a 1-6 record.

Up next, Homer will host OnTech Charter on Thursday (January 5th) at 6:15pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Cincinnatus vs. Otselic Valley (Fabius-Pompey Holiday Tournament)

The Cincinnatus Lions defeated Otselic Valley with a close score of 44-43 in the consolation game of the Fabius-Pompey Holiday Tournament. 

With this win, Cincinnatus improved their overall record to 1-5. 

Cincinnatus was led by John Schuyler (19 points) and Tucker Latta (8 points). 

Otselic Valley was led by Braden Davis (19 points) and Owen Davis (9 points).

Cincinnatus’ next game will be played at home against Otselic Valley on Thursday (January 5th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: McGraw vs. Cato-Meridian (Holiday Booster Club Tournament)

The McGraw Eagles lost a close game against Cato-Meridian in the first round of the Holiday Booster Club Tournament at Cato-Meridian with a score of 63-68. 

With this loss, McGraw has fallen to an overall record of 5-1. 

McGraw was led by Nick Sutton (17 points), Caleb Epp (17 points), and Gaven Truman (13 points).

Cato-Meridian was led by Carter Impson (20 points), Jacob Carroll (16 points), and De'Von Adams (13 points). 

McGraw played the consolation game of the tournament against Wiliamson today (December 30th) at 10am. A recap of the game will be available on The Cortland Voice Website tomorrow (December 31st). 

Varsity Girls Basketball: Homer vs. Syracuse West

The Homer Lady Trojans defeated Syracuse West with a score of 53-46 in order to improve their overall record to 3-6 on Thursday. 

Homer was led by Catherine Apker (16 points), Madison Singleton (9 points), and Kaylee Darling (8 points). 

Syracuse West was led by Addison Sheridan (11 points) and Makayla Sheridan (9 points).

Up next, Homer is scheduled to play on the road against Syracuse Academy of Science on Tuesday (January 3rd) at 7pm. 

Varsity Girls Basketball: Cincinnatus vs. McGraw (Fabius-Pompey Holiday Tournament)

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions defeated the McGraw Eagles in the consolation game of the Fabius-Pompey Holiday Tournament with a score of 39-25. 

Note: Stats of the game were not made available by the time this article was written. 

With this result, Cincinnatus improved their overall record to 1-5, while McGraw fell to an 0-5 record.

Up next, Cincinnatus will host Otselic Valley on Tuesday (January 3rd) at 6pm; while McGraw will play Cincinnatus once again at McGraw High School on Friday (January 6th) at 6pm.
