Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (January 6th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s events

Varsity Indoor Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Schools 

The Homer Trojans  competed in the Mohawk Valley Meet at Utica University Friday evening. 

According to Homer head coach George Schneider, all events were scored as relays. Teams of two earned a place based on a combination of times, distances and/or heights.

Here are some highlights from both the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams: 

Homer Boys

  • Logan Darling (55’1”) and Jonah Campos (33’11”) won 1st place in the weight throw event.  Jonah (39’7.5”) and Logan (31’9”) also placed 5th in the shot put event.
  • Gunnar Tyrrell (38’10”) and Dylan Pittsley (32’1”) placed 8th in the triple jump event.  According to coach Schneider, Gunnar’s jump broke the Homer freshman class record in the event and qualified for Sectionals.
  • Damian Brown (11:44.40) and Aiden Small (13:52.86) placed 8th in the 3,200 meter run.

Homer Girls

  • Jane Gugerty (28.9), Camdyn Cole (28.3), Caitlin McCloy (29.4), and Ingrid Aagaard (28.8) came in 2nd place in the 4x200 meter relay with combined official time of 1:55.34.  
  • Molly McMasters (27’2”) and Hannah Bouwens (25’6”) placed 3rd in the shot put event.  Molly McMasters (27’4”) and Hannah Bouwens (25’11”) placed 4th in the weight throw event. With these results, both Molly McMasters and Hannah Bouwens qualified for Sectionals in both events.
  • Camdyn Cole (31’9.25”) and Jane Gugerty (31’7.25”) placed 4th in the triple jump event.  They also placed 5th in the 55 meter dash. Cammy ran an 8.11 and Jane ran an 8.13.
  • Emma Effinger (2:45.8), Caitlin McCloy (2:56.1), Haley Tucker (3:08.8), and Ingrid Aagard (2:46.7) came in 6th place in the 4x800 meter relay with an official combined time of 11:37.40. 
  • Ingrid Aagaard (46.87) and Emma Effinger (49.27) placed 8th in the 300 meter run.

Varsity Boys Basketball: Cortland vs. Auburn

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost a close game against Auburn with a score of 52-58. 

With this loss, Cortland has fallen to an overall record of 3-4. 

Cortland was led by Benjamin McGrath (20 points, 12 rebounds & 1 steal), Marvin Bell (14 points & 2 rebounds), and Emerson Johnson (10 points, 7 rebounds & 3 assists). 

Auburn was led by Tony Borges (14 points), Jack Tumber (13 points), and DeSean Strachan (12 points). 

Up next, Cortland will play on the road against Central Square on Tuesday (January 10th) at 6:45pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Marathon vs. Newfield

The Marathon Olympians lost 50-74 against Newfield Friday night. 

With this loss, Marathon has fallen to an 0-7 record. 

Marathon was led by Conor Holland (30 points) and Bryce Hartman (11 points). 

Newfield was led by Hezekiah McCoy (27 points), Austin Jenney (23 points), and Jalen Hardison (15 points). 

Marathon’s next game will be played on the road against Unatego at 4:15pm today (January 7th).

Varsity Girls Basketball: Marathon vs. Newfield

The Marathon Lady Olympians beat Newfield 51-37 in order to improve to an overall record of 6-5. 

Marathon was led by Abby Ensign (24 points), Addison Oram (8 points), Anna Hoyt (7 points), and Catherine Newkirk (7 points). 

Newfield was led by Emily Dunn (10 points) and Sierra Lynch (10 points). 

Up next, Marathon will play Odessa Montour Central on the road on Friday (January 13th) at 7:45pm. 

Varsity Girls Basketball: McGraw vs. Cincinnatus

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions defeated McGraw at McGraw High School Friday night with a score of 32-29. 

With this result, Cincinnatus improved to a 3-6 record, while McGraw fell to 0-6.

Note: stats of the game were not available by the time this article was written. 

Up next, Cincinnatus will host Solvay on Wednesday (January 11th) at 5:30pm; while McGraw plays Otselic Valley at home on Thursday (January 12th) at 6pm.
