Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (January 7th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Saturday’s events:

Varsity Boys Basketball: Marathon vs. Unatego

The Marathon Olympians won their first game of the regular season against Unatego to improve to a 1-7 record. Marathon won the game with a score of 64-35.

“Marathon has been playing better together, and the last few games have shown our improvement,” said Marathon Head Coach Jim Holland. 

“We are finally getting kids healthy to play and this only helps with all aspects of the game,” added Coach Holland. 

Marathon was led by Conor Holland (33 points) and Bryce Hartman (12 points). 

Unatego was led by Braeden Johnson (16 points) and Xander Johnson (10 points). 

Marathon’s next game will be played at home against DeRuyter this Tuesday (January 10th) at 7:15pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Cincinnatus vs. Faith Heritage

The Cincinnatus Lions lost 39-65 against Faith Heritage on Saturday. With this loss, Cincinnatus has fallen to an overall record of 1-7. 

Cincinnatus was led by Canden Stafford (18 points) and Jack Stafford (11 points). 

Faith Heritage was led by Westin Retzos (20 points) and Jack Marziale (16 points).

Up next, Cincinnatus will host Madison on Tuesday (January 17th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Girls Basketball: Cortland vs. Chenango Forks

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost a close game against Chenango Forks with a score of 46-48 on Saturday. 

With this loss, Cortland now holds a 7-3 record. 

Cortland was led by Kendall Mack (13 points), Valerosa Gambitta (10 points), Mallory Turner (10 points), and Claire Turner (10 points). 

Note: stats for Chenango Forks were not available by the time this article was written.

Up next, Cortland will host Central Square on Tuesday (January 10th) at 6:45pm.

Varsity Girls Volleyball: McGraw vs. Port Byron

The McGraw Eagles lost in four sets against Port Byron on Saturday. 

With this loss, McGraw now holds an 0-7 record. 

McGraw was led by Madison Lawrence (3 kills, 7 blocks & 2 aces), Chloe Rocker (2 kills), and Madison Boyer (1 assist & 4 aces). 

Port Byron was led by Jordan Cook (15 kills, 1 ace, 1 assist & 1 dig) and Marlena Doerle (16 assists, 8 aces & 2 digs). 

McGraw is now scheduled to host DeRuyter on Monday (January 9th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Teams (607 Invitational at SUNY Cortland)

The Cortland Purple Tigers competed in the 607 Invitational at SUNY Cortland on Saturday. 

Here are some highlights from Cortland’s team: 

  • Bryan Honan won 1st place in the weight throw event (Result - 48’1.5”) 
  • Mike Dearie tied for 6th place in the weight throw event (Result - 31’1”)

Varsity Track & Field: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (607 Invitational at SUNY Cortland)

The Marathon Olympians competed in the 607 Invitational at SUNY Cortland on Saturday. 

Here are some highlights from Marathon's team: 

  • Andrew Edsall placed 3rd in the pole vault event (Result - 6’6”)
  • Abigail Trabucco finished 2nd in the pole vault event (Result - 8’0”). She also came in 3rd place in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 5:47.78) and placed 7th in the 300 meter run (Time - 49.49)
