Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (January 14th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Saturday’s events:

Varsity Indoor Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Schools

The Homer Trojans competed in the Fred Kirschenheiter Memorial Invitational at Onondaga Community College on Saturday. 

Here are some highlights from Homer’s boys’ & girls’ teams:

Homer Boys

  • Jonah Campos placed 3rd in the weight throw event (Result - 42’0.5”). He also came in 6th place in the shot put event (Result - (36’3.5”). Campos’ weight throw was a personal best. 
  • Dominic Fiore placed 8th in the weight throw event (Result -  36’3.5”). Fiore’s throw was a personal best, and  qualified him for sectionals.
  • Damian Brown finished 8th in the 3,200 meter run (Time 11:22.30). His run was a personal best.

Homer Girls

  • Camdyn Cole won 1st place in the triple jump event (Result - 33’6”).
  • Jane Gugerty placed 2nd in the long jump event (Result - 14’8.75”). She also placed 3rd in the 55 meter hurdles (Time - 9.78 seconds).
  • Caitlin McCloy (74.4), Emma Effinger (69.2), Ingrid Aagaard (64.9), and Jane Gugerty (68.3) came in 3rd place in the 4x400 meter relay with an official time of 4:36.86.  
  • Natalie Funk (31.0), Ingrid Aagaard (28.5), Emma Effinger (31.2), and Camdyn Cole (28.7) placed 4th in the 4x200 meter relay with an official time of 1:59.58.  
  • Ingrid Aagaard came in 5th place in the 600 meter run (Time - 1:48.23). With her performance, Aagaard broke the freshman class record in the 600 meter run, and qualified for Sectionals.
  • Haley Tucker (2:58.3), Morgan Robideau (3:08.5), Brynn Loomis (3:28.0), and Maggie Mahunik (3:16.4) placed 5th in the 4x800 meter relay with an official time of 12:51.16.  
  • Molly McMasters placed 6th in the shot put event (Result - 25’3.75”).

Varsity Indoor Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Schools

The Cortland Purple Tigers competed in the Fred Kirschenheiter Memorial Invitational at Onondaga Community College on Saturday. 

Here are some highlights from both the Cortland boys’ & girls’ teams:

Cortland Boys

  • Duncan Harbin won 1st place in the weight throw event (Result - 49’2.50”) as well as in the shot put event (Result - 42’3.50”). 
  • Jack Phelan placed 3rd in the triple jump event (Result - 40’2.50”). He also came in 4th place in the long jump event (Result - 19’4.50”).
  • Bryan Honan placed 2nd in the weight throw event (Result - 44’10”). He also placed 5th in the shot put event (Result - 36’5.50”). 

Cortland Girls

  • Lillian Call won 1st place in the 600 meter run (Time - 1:41.89). 
  • Rileigh Madden placed 5th in the pole vault event (Result - 7’0”). 
  • Campbell Bush came in 4th place in the 55 meter hurdles (Time - 9.86). 

Varsity Indoor Track & Field: Marathon vs. Multiple Schools

The Marathon Olympians competed in the Winter Classic meet at SUNY Cortland on Saturday. 

Here are some highlights from both the Marathon boys’ & girls’ teams:

Marathon Boys

  • Robert Anderson finished in 6th place in the 600 meter run (Time - 1:34.66). 
  • Andrew Edsall placed 7th in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 5:19.76).

Marathon Girls

Varsity Wrestling: Homer’s Sam Sorenson wins Eastern State Classic wrestling tournament

Sam Sorenson

Homer’s Sam Sorenson won the Eastern State Classic wrestling tournament at 215 lbs this past weekend. 

Sorenson was also named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

Here are the results from each of Sam Sorenson’s matches: 

  • Round 3 - Sam Sorenson (Homer) over Gavin Furst (Cornwall) - Pin
  • Quarterfinals - Sam Sorenson (Homer) over Dominic Jones (Mount Markham) - Pin
  • Semifinals - Sam Sorenson (Homer) over Justin Duhancik (Stratford) - Major Decision (9-0)
  • 1st Place Match - Sam Sorenson (Homer) over Ethan Gallo (Minisink Valley) - Decision (4-2)

Varsity Boys Basketball: Cortland vs. Oswego

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost a close game against Oswego on Saturday with a score of 49-51. 

With this loss, Cortland now holds a 3-7 record. 

Cortland was led by Benjamin McGrath (13 points), Emerson Johnson (13 points), and Jaxson Gambitta (10 points). 

Oswego was led by Moreno Fenty (18 points) and Camden Atkinson (12 points). 

Up next, Cortland will play at home against East Syracuse Minoa this Wednesday (January 18th) at 6:45pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Homer vs. Westhill

The Homer Trojans lost a tough game with a score of 50-79 against Westhill on Saturday. 

Homer was led by Evan Butts (21 points) and Wyatt Wilbur (15 points). 

Westhill was led by Kam Langdon (22 points), Shawn Mayes (19 points), and Luke Gilmartin (11 points). 

With this loss, Homer has fallen to an overall record of 3-8. 

Homer’s next game will be played on the road against Skaneateles on Friday (January 20th) at 6:45pm.
