Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (January 21st)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Saturday’s events:

Varsity Boys Wrestling: Homer vs. Multiple Schools (Denny Wright Memorial Duals)

The Homer Trojans hosted the Denny Wright Memorial Duals where they matched up against Sherburne-Earlville, Jordan-Elbridge, Sidney, Altmar-Parish-Williamstown/Pulaski (APWP), and Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton/Harpursville (BGAH). 

According to Homer Athletics, the Denny Wright Memorial Duals is a cancer research tournament fundraiser in memory and honor of Coach Denny Wright. This year’s proceeds will go directly to Homer junior James Griffin and his family. James was recently diagnosed with stage 3 brain cancer.

Varsity Indoor Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Teams (Bob Grieve Memorial Invitational)

The Homer Trojans competed in the Bob Grieve Memorial Invitational at Onondaga Community College on Saturday. 

Here are some highlights from both the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams: 

Homer Boys

• Logan Darling placed 2nd in the Weight Throw event (Result - 54’0.5”). He also had a personal best throw of 37’1.0” in the shot put event to qualify for Sectionals.
• Gunnar Tyrrell broke the Freshman Class Record in the 55 meter dash with an official time of 7.18 seconds.
• Damian Brown ran a personal best time of 3:01.37 in the 1,000 meter run that qualified gim for Sectionals.

Homer Girls

• Camdyn Cole placed 4th in the triple jump event (Result - 32’8.25”).
• Molly McMasters placed 7th in the weight throw event (Result - 31’6.5”). Her weight throw performance broke her own junior class record. 
• Ingrid Aagard broke the freshman class record in the 300 meter run (Time - 45.83). She also broke her freshman class record in the 55 meter dash (Time - 7.91). Both times qualified her for Sectionals.

Varsity Indoor Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Teams (Bob Grieve Memorial Invitational)

The Cortland Purple Tigers Trojans competed in the Mohawk Valley Meet in Utica on Saturday. 

Here are some highlights from both the Cortland boys’ and girls’ teams: 

Cortland Boys

• Jack Phelan came in 4th place in the 55 meter dash (Time - 6.94). He also placed 5th in the long jump event (Result - 18’10”). 
• Duncan Harbin placed 5th in the shot put event (Result - 39’9.50”). He also placed 7th in the weight throw event (Result - 40’0.5”). 

Cortland Girls

• Lillian Call won 1st place in the 600 meter run (Time - 1:39.77). She also came in 5th place in the 300 meter run (Time 44.49). 
• Campbell Bush came in 4th place in the 55 meter hurdles (Time - 9.82). 

Varsity Girls Basketball: Cortland vs. Oswego

The Cortland Lady Tigers defeated Oswego with a close score of 68-64 in order to improve to a 12-3 overall record on Saturday. 

Cortland was led by Kendall Mack (23 points), Valerosa Gambitta (19 points), and Claire Turner (13 points). 

Oswego was led by Maria Sweet (20 points), Adriana Ellis (20 points), and Sophia Babcock (12 points). 

Up next, Cortland is scheduled to play Chittenango at Cortland High School this Tuesday (January 24th) at 6:45pm.
