The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office is reminding all snowmobile operators that the New York State trail systems in the county are currently closed, according to a release.
The County Sheriff’s Office plans to patrol the county’s trails after recently receiving complaints of activity. County sheriff’s officers will respond to snowmobile complaints where necessary action will be needed.
The release stated most snowmobile trails are seasonal, and a majority of snowmobile-only trails are on privately-owned land.
“These trails exist only with the permission of the landowner,” the release noted. “The trail passage is a privilege and not a right. If the trails and land around is not respected, it could cause unnecessary damage to the property and the trail could be permanently closed.”
Those seeking further information can contact their local snowmobile clubs or monitor social media updates to determine when the trails are open.
