Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (February 8th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Teams (Sectional Championships)

The Cortland Tigers competed in the Class B1 Sectional Championships at Onondaga Community College Wednesday evening.

Here are some highlights from both the Cortland boys’ and girls’ teams: 

Cortland Boys

  • Duncan Harbin won 1st place in the shot put event (Result - 42’7.50”). He also placed 3rd in the weight throw event (Result - 45’0.75”). 
  • Jack Phelan won 1st place in the triple jump event (Result - 42’8.25”). He also came in 2nd place in the long jump event (Result - 19’5.50”) as well as in the 55 meter dash (Time - 6.86). 
  • Bryan Honan placed 2nd in the weight throw event (Result - 45’1.75”). He also placed 4th in the shot put event (Result - 39’6.50”).
  • Spenser Dodds finsihed in 2nd place in the 1,000 meter run (Time - 2:52.87). 

Cortland Girls

  • Lillian Call won 1st place in the 1,000 meter run (Time - 3:18.25). 
  • Campbell Bush finished in 3rd place in the 55 meter hurdles (Time - 9.57) . She also placed 5th in the 55 meter dash (Time - 7.99). 
  • Rileigh Madden placed 3rd in the pole vault event (Result - 7’6”). 
  • Ashley Merritt placed 4th in the pole vault event (Result - 6’6”). 
  • Morgann Doane placed 5th in the long jump event (Result - 13’8.75”). 

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Multiple Teams (Sectional Championships)

The Homer Trojans competed in the Class B1 Sectional Championships at Onondaga Community College on Wednesday.

Here are some highlights from both the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams: 

Homer Boys

  • Logan Darling won 1st place in the weight throw event (Result - 55’10.75”). He also placed 6th in the shot put event (Result - 39’3.25”). Darling’s weight throw was a personal record, as well as a school breaking record
  • Jonah Campos placed 2nd in the shot put event (Result - 40’5”). He also placed 4th in the weight throw event (Result - 43’7.5”).
  • Cooper Van Dee (25.1), Gunnar Tyrrell (25.6), Nick Costa (26.0), and Jonah Campos (26.7) came in 3rd place in the 4x200 meter relay with an official time of 1:43.63.
  • Gunnar Tyrrell placed 4th in the triple jump event (Result - 39’3”).
  • Cooper Van Dee finished 4th in the 300 meter run (Time - 39.49). He also placed 5th in the long jump event (Result - 18’0.5”).
  • Damian Brown came in 4th place in the 1,000 meter run (Time - 3:02.41).

Homer Girls

  • Molly McMasters placed 2nd in the shot put event (Result - 28’3.25”) as well as in the weight throw event (Result - 29’2”).
  • Emma Effinger (68.0), Jane Gugerty (69.1), Camdyn Cole (67.9), and Ingrid Aagard (63.9) came in 2nd place in the 4x400 meter relay with an official time of 4:29.02.
  • Jane Gugerty (29.7), Camdyn Cole (28.6), Ingrid Aagaard (28.4), and Caitlin McCloy (29.3) placed third in the 4x200 meter relay with an official time of 1:56.01.
  • Ingrid Aagaard finished 4th in the 55 meter dash (Time - 7.91).
  • Jane Gugerty placed 4th in the 55 meter hurdles (Time - 9.61).
  • Hannah Bouwens placed 3rd in the shot put event (Result - 27’10”) and came in 6th place in the weight throw event (Result - 26’3”).
  • Camdyn Cole placed 5th in the triple jump event (Result - 32’2.75”).
  • Ellie Ensign placed 6th in the shot put event (Result - 23’2.5”).
  • Haley Tucker, Mia Knight, Morgan Robideau (3:18.7), and Emma Effinger (3:08.2) combined to come in 6th place in the 4x800 meter relay with an official time of 12:26.95.

Varsity Girls Basketball: Marathon vs. Southern Cayuga

The Marathon Lady Olympians lost 51-57 against Southern Cayuga on the road Wednesday night. 

With this loss, Marathon now holds a 9-9 record. 

Marathon was led by Abby Ensign (31 points), Addison Oram (8 points), and Catherine Newkirk (8 points). 

Southern Cayuga was led by Ellie Brozon (23 points), Charli Bennett (12 points), and Norah McCarthy (12 points). 

Up next, Marathon will play Trumansburg on the road this Friday (February 10th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Homer vs. Chittenango

The Homer Trojans fell to an overall record of 5-11 after losing a tough game against Chittenango with a score of 50-89. 

Homer was led by Evan Butts (32 points), Izaiah Beard (5 points), and Alex Voltra (4 points). 

Chittenango was led by Ryan Moesch (27 points), Alex Moesch (25 points), and Tyrus Kelly (13 points).

Homer’s next game will be played on the road against Mexico this Friday (February 10th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Ice Hockey: Cortland-Homer vs. Whitesboro

The Cortland-Homer Golden Eagles improved to a 16-3 record after beating Whitesboro 5-1 on Wednesday. 

Cortland-Homer was led by Mitch Riter (3 assists), Andrew Partigianoni (1 goal & 2 assists), Chris Yang (1 assist), Gabby Cranfield (1 assist), Hunter Everle (1 goal & 1 assist), Finn Thomas (1 assist), Ryan Spalding (1 goal & 1 assist), Liam O’Connor (2 goals), and Garret Clark (21 saves). 

Whitesboro was led by Tyler Stivali (1 assist), Santino Pedulla (1 goal), and Kristian Matthews (33 saves). 

This was Cortland-Homer’s last game of the regular season. 

According to Section III, there will be a seeding meeting on February 12th, where the Golden Eagles will find out who they will be playing in their first sectional game of the postseason.
