A Cortland County woman made “several false returns” on items from when she was an employee at a local hardware store, according to a report from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office.

The report stated on Jan. 18, county sheriff’s officers responded to an investigation of reported fraud at Harbor Freight Tools store in the town of Cortlandville.

Margaret E. Hollenbeck, 45 of Homer, a former employee of Harbor Freight, made returns to the store for items she “never purchased,” the report noted. Hollenbeck proceeded to credit the cost of the items she “falsely returned to herself,” the report continued.

Hollenbeck responded to the county sheriff’s office on Feb. 13, where she was arrested and charged with nine counts of first-degree falsifying business records (a Class-E Felony) and nine counts of petit larceny (a Class-A Misdemeanor). She was recently arraigned and released.
