Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (February 16th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Boys Basketball: Cortland vs. Oneida (First Round of Sectionals)

The 16th-seeded Cortland Tigers defeated 17th-seeded Oneida in the first round of the Section III Class B tournament with a score of 64-56.

Cortland was led by Marvin Bell (26 points), Benjamin McGrath (19 points), and Emerson Johnson (8 points).  

Oneida was led by Bryson Carinci (14 points) and Hayden Freebern (14 points).

Cortland is now scheduled to play in the second round of the sectional tournament against the 1st-seeded Central Valley Academy Thunder on Saturday (February 18th). According to Section III's website, the game will be played at Central Valley Academy at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Homer vs. Syracuse ITC (First Round of Sectionals)

The 18th-seeded Homer Trojans lost 50-70 against Syracuse ITC (#15 seed) in the first round of the Section III Class B tournament on the road Thursday night. 

Homer was led by Evan Butts (33 points) and Max Franco (6 points). 

Syracuse ITC was led by Antwan Aiken Jr (21 points) and Nyquan Gilbert (15 points).

With this loss, Homer ended their season with a 6-13 record. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Cincinnatus vs. Town of Webb (First Round of Sectionals)

The 20th-seeded Cincinnatus Lions lost 41-69 in the first round of the Section III Class D playoff tournament against 13th-seed Town of Webb. 

Cincinnatus was led by John Schuyler (15 points), Canden Stafford (8 points), and Jack Stafford (6 points). 

Town of Webb was led by Alex Williams (18 points) and Dominic Aliasso (15 points). 

Cincinnatus ended their season with an overall record of 4-15. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Marathon vs. Oneonta

The Marathon Olympians ended their regular season with an 8-12 record after losing to Oneonta with a score of 36-49. 

Marathon was led by Conor Holland (20 points), Zachary Birdsall (4 points), and Bode Carter (4 points). 

Oneonta was led by Brady Carr (13 points), Owen Brunsworth (9 points), and Britten Zeh (8 points).

Marathon will now wait to see who they will be playing in the first round of the Section IV Class D Tournament. The first round of the tournament is scheduled to take place on Tuesday (February 21st). 

Varsity Girls Basketball: Homer vs. Clinton (First Round of Sectionals)

The 18th-seeded Homer Lady Trojans suffered a close 41-44 loss in the first round of the Section III Class B tournament against Clinton (15th-seed). 

Homer was led by Catherine Apker (10 points), Madison Singleton (6 points), and Elia Spanbauer (6 points). 

Clinton was led by Eva Gaetano (21 points) and Alice Gaetano (12 points). 

With this loss, Homer ended their season with an overall record of 7-14. 

Varsity Boys Volleyball: Cincinnatus vs. Mount Markham

The Cincinnatus boys volleyball team fell to a 0-14 record after losing in three sets against Mount Markham.

Cincinnatus is scheduled to play Little Falls at home on Thursday (February 23rd) at 4pm.
